Immersion program waitlist in fairfax county

Anonymous
Hi,
We are moving from MD to Fairfax VA next month and am interested in getting my rising first grader into one of the spanish immersion programs for next year. Does anyone have experience with getting a spot so late in the application process. Will they continue to take kids off the waitlist even after the school year starts? and if so how long into the school year (Oct, Nov, Dec)? Any insight into the process would be helpful.
Thanks.

I have no direct experience, but all the immersion programs, and especially the Spanish program, are supposed to be hard to get into. I would be surprised if you can get in during the summer from what I hear.

Our immersion program continues to take kids from the wait list almost until school starts. Plans change over the summer, some kids move, and some parents switch schools late in the game, so there are spots that open up. As for after the school year starts, unless your child is a native speaker or is coming from another immersion program, it's unlikely that there will be a spot. They really try to get those classes settled, but it's best to call the individual school that you are looking at to find out how they handle it. If it's a magnet and an immersion school then that's different than if it's your local school and an immersion school. Not sure that you could get into the magnet at all after school starts, but there are wait lists for them as well.

Braddock Elementary School is starting a Kindergarten Spanish immersion program next year. The World Language office will be doing a lottery.

More info is in their weekly newsletter:

I thought they weren't announcing those schools until later in the year! Any idea what the second one is?
