Infertility Support and Discussion
I'm trying this month a cycle of IUI with injectibles but I'm really scared about the idea of having twins or triples since I already have a child, financially and emotionally I think it will tough on my marriage. My doctor told me we are talking about 5% on my age range (I'm 40) but for what I've seen in the internet it seems to be higher. Do any of you have experience with this and if so, how many of you had multiples? Is there a way to cancel the cycle if there is a risk of getting multiples? Thanks for any information.

You can cancel a cycle if you and/or your doctor feel like there are too many potentially mature follicles.
I did IUI with injectibles - and frozen sperm - and had four follicles mature in my successful cycles (one only during the previous cycles). We were prepared to perform selective reduction, if necessary. However, I happily ended up with a singleton. I too was 40 at the time. Do you know what your highest FSH measurement was? That will help give you a sense of your ovarian reserve/egg health. |
I did IUI w/injectibles and ended up with twins. I was 39 at the time. We were surprised by twins b/c at the last ultrasound before trigger (?) it looked like only one egg was ready to drop.
I second that you can cancel if you want- it sounds like you haven't done an IUI before- you still don't know if you'll respond well or twoo well or poor.. I responded poorly- and am a poor egg producer.. I have 4 unsuccessful iuis and then one xld ivf and then an ivf with the only two viable embryos.. they both took in a way- but one became a blighted ovum (an empty growing sac- miscarriage) right from the beginning- and the other is sleeping in another room.. basically, you never know- i'm glad we put both in since who knows which was our DC!
OP here. I had my ultrasound yesterday and I had 3 eggs that promised (18, 20 & 21 mm), so I triggered yesterday. I'm less scared that when I posted about having twins, I guess you take some perspective knowing that because of your age (I'm almost 41) the chances of conceiving are very slim.... Thanks for the responses and yes, this is my first IUI. I conceived naturally my first one at 37 after 2 months TTC, so I never though I will go through this.

pg with twins after intercourse and injecctbles. i think ivf is the "safest" way to avoid twins but is likely cost prohibitive, especially if you only use one at a time. in any case good luck!
20:49 here- good luck OP- please post updates! I also had 3 - I was 39 with first and only IUI and 40 then 41 for IUIs and then xld and then successful IVF.. It sounds to me like you';re at the stage I was at first - meaning, you may just need your odds increased by IUI.. best of luck!
I had IUI with injectibles (age 29.) I had done 7 IUIs with no pregnancy. At my last one, I had 3 follicles (15, 18, 21) and got pregnant with triplets. The doctor (and we) were SHOCKED since he gave us a 5% chance of having twins. We ended up reducing one (hardest decision ever) and now have 2 year old twins.
OP here. I'm pregnant !!! I can't belive it after just one try. My hGC level was 218, which looks like a singleton, what do you think?
Sounds like a singleton to me too - best wishes to you! |
OP here. It was indeed a singleton !!! We had our US on Monday and everything looks good!!!
Congrats! I'm trying the same thing this cycle, and am also 40. It's reassuring to know that most of us on this protocol who are 40 and over have singletons (though I'd take two babies over no babies any day .
