If you spend $8 extra a day, to save ~70 minutes on your commute, you'd do it...right?
Right now, I spend about 1.5 hrs total commute from Herndon to Metro Center. I drive to the park-and-ride (15-20 mins), sometimes wait 10-15 mins, bus to WFC metro (25 mins--sans traffic delay), then WFC->Metro Center (25 mins--sans metro delay)...so on the high end, ~85 mins. On the low end, ~65 mins. Not including walking time from car to bus, and bus to train and train to office. I've been stuck in a bus in Toll Road traffic, too...so sometimes it's higher. If I pay for reserved parking at Vienna, ($65/month extra), I figured the commute (sans traffic/metro delay) will be about 50 minutes, each way (20 mins driving + 30 minutes train). No toll road traffic. 85 - 50 = 35 mins each way = 70 total / day. Do it...right? Plus I'd always get at seat on the train... |
| I would. |
| If your estimates are indeed correct, then yes I would totally pay an extra $8/day to shave 70 minutes off the commute. What I am wondering though is how it takes you 10-15 minutes to get to the park-and-drive and 20 minutes (so only 5-10 extra) to go all the way to Vienna? I used to live right by the park-and-drive off Reston Parkway (near the intersection with Fox Mill), and it was faster to take the bus to WFC than to drive to Vienna. |
| Absolutely! With the new ICC in Maryland, it costs $4 each way during rush hour to go from where I live to where I work, so that's $8 extra per day. I save, on average, 60 minutes each day of commuting time. Totally worth it. And less stressful, too. |

I am also about 10 mins from that P&R (live off of Fox Mill towards Oakton), however the busses are so intermittent at that P&R, and sometimes I have to stay late...that's it's more often than not, that I haul it to the RTC park and ride.
I'm about 8 miles from Vienna Metro station. |
I was wondering who that was driving on the ICC - now I know!
Not many people feel the same way as you do though, judging from the low numbers of cars during rush hour |
| We don't go across the ICC except when we travel. If we leave or return at a peak time, it can save between 15-45 minutes depending on the beltway. If I'm traveling anytime during the work day, I'll use the ICC. Otherwise, we'll come down, go around the beltway and back out I-95. But that's only about 4-6 times per year (I've done it twice so far since December). |
