College counseling best practices

For parents of seniors and recent grads -- what did your school's college counseling staff do well? How did the counselors help you and your child throughout the college application process -- from helping you develop a list of schools to visit, through completing the applications, to sorting through the acceptances and rejections? And what do you wish they had done?

OP, I'm assuming from your questions that your DC is in a private school? DS's public school counselor mailed off the counselor and school forms and transcript to each college where DC applied (in stamped addressed envelopes that we provided). If I can think of anything else, I'll post later.

Actually from the tone of OP I assumed she is actually the college counselor.
