medication "down there" while pregnant

Anonymous
So had my first pregnancy OB visit yesterday. Went fine, second kid, nothing exciting, blah blah blah. Today I get a phone call telling me they swabbed (had pap smear) to check for bacteria and yeast and I was positive for both. Ok. They called in a prescription for me to address the bacteria and said after using that medication, to use something OTC for the yeast. I am having NO symptoms. No discharge, funkiness, nothing.

So I stop at the pharmacy then get home tonight and read the package insert for the Metronidazole Vaginal Gel. It's pregnancy category B and hasn't been studied in pregnant women, and should only be used if clearly needed. The insert also mentions that yeah, it cases cancer in mice/rats (oral, and high doses, but still...) I'm really not feeling good about this. I don't think it's urgent and will call my doctor on Monday before using the medication, but has anyone had this happen or used this medication? I just kind of feel like WTF? How do they decide if it's clearly needed?

Oh, I should add that I'm only 6.5 weeks pregnant.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I posted a few days ago and got a few responses you might want to check them out. I have a bacterial infection and was prescribed an antibiotic ( i am 33 weeks pregnant). The infection is mild but I do feel a little bit of itching/discomfort in the vaginal area. My doc did mention I could wait a few days to see if the symptoms cleared up on their own, but if not to start the medicine. It is also a Type B drug...but he said it was safe for pregnancy, so I trust him.
