Is Summer Residential Governor’s Schools a big deal?

DS went last year. I wish he hadn’t gone. Not a great experience and I kept hearing “life changing”… disorganized, half a*sed. Just not a good use of his time.

Fabulous experience overall, but sad to see the current Governor limiting the students' academic freedom. Certain topics were, well, off topic.

oh puhleeze, take it to the politics forum. He is doing nothing of the kind

Nope, sorry. Gov Youngkin absolutely is placing restrictions on Gov School. My DC last summer and the students were instructed that they could not raise certain sensitive topics when they did their presentations.

Still a great program overall, but this part was extremely disappointing. Don't think these kids don't notice. The counselors thought the restrictions were awful too, but they were powerless.

The sensitivity restrictions have been in place for many years, starting with a Democratic governor, and well before Youngkin’s election. Correct that they do restrict certain sensitive topics, but flat wrong that it was put in place by the current Governor.

So nothing equivalent for Maryland students huh? Just Virginia and a few other southern states…

Anonymous wrote:DC received a notification yesterday that his application (humanities) has been sent forward to VDOE for consideration. Not sure where it came but it mentioned that VDOE would notify applicants in early April. Does it mean that VDOE would perform another round of review at the state level? What is the acceptance rate at state level? Thanks,

When my kid went through 3 years ago, there used to be an administrator's guide on the Gov School's website. I don't see it there.

I did keep the one we had.

Yes, there is another review at the state level. Here's what it says:

March-April 2022 VDOE's selection process takes place.

With regards to the acceptance rate, they don't publish that at all.

Goodluck! My kid is now a college freshman and still talks fondly of gov school. Made really good friends he still keeps in touch with.

Humanities was disorganized. A mess and waste of time.

On the VADOE website it says we would be notified by Feb. 23 if we did not make the regional cut. Do we assume now if we have not been notified we did make the cut? Do they find out either way???

Just found out we are through to the State Level--what is the chance of getting in now? What percent of those sent to State level that get in?

Who did you hear from? The program itself or your school?

I think it depends on where you live. I think they want students from all over the state. We live in a fairly rural county and I don't think my daughter had much competition but I believe it was harder for kids coming from Fairfax and Loudoun.

If we've heard nothing from our school, do we assume we made it to state level? This process is really frustrating......just sitting around guessing and waiting!
