Adopting newborn at 52 years old?

I have several friends waiting for newborns for years and years and they're under 40 and married and financially stable. It's exceedingly difficult to adopt a healthy newborn in this country.

You're using "healthy newborn" and "newborn" as synonyms. They aren't.

Don't speculate about another child's personal medical information. It's ugly.

But the decision was likely made by the birth mother. It is her call. (They literally look through books of perspective adoptive parents and chose).

Some teens choose single moms because they were raised by a single mom. Maybe in this case they were moved by her letter or meeting her. Or they wanted financial security for their child. You cannot assume that she pulled strings.

I worry about cases like this and always think about playwright Wendy Wasserstein who chose to be a single mother around 50 and then died at 55 from cancer.

So many children need loving homes so if she can give a child a chance at life then good for her.

However, as a an adoptive mother of a teen, and now in my fifties, I can say that I often feel too old and tired to deal with teen melodrama. However, we have a good relationship.

46 is quite different from 52.

Excellent point!

I know a few that outlived their kids. 52 today is very young considering our lives, diet, and medical advances. Betty White almost made it to 100. Also, people are forgetting she adopted her first child in her 40's. Not a big deal at all. More should adopt.

Not for most.

I dunno. I'm 56 and can run circles around most 30 year olds so I'm pretty sure I can handle a newborn. And probably do a better job of parenting now than I did 25 years ago.

This can happen at any age. It's not limited to women in their fifties.

My sister is an adoptee of parents that were 56-57, it's going as bad as you assumed it would.

At 74 one passed, and the other is now in a nursing home.

They didn't believe in a will/planning, so the responsibility falling to a 15-16 year old was impossible. The money is no doubt being mismanaged, my younger sister just now asked for me to hire a lawyer to fight for her. So we'll see how it plays out.

Right now her god parents say they've been making monthly withdrawals from her mom's account on her behalf. Which sounds very illegal.
