Another thing to consider is that part of the county has a lot of military kids. IB has no value to them because there is a good chance they will move during high school, either into or out of fcps.

They mostly want AP and are going to try to avoid schools that are IB.

If you are at an IB school but want AP you can pupil place to AP school. So why do we have IB clustered around? To give the other kids an option out of their school into a better school?

We have so many residents employed by the federal government, too, and therefore many feds' kids. We should eliminate AP and IB courses in US Government because the kids do not need to learn these content areas as they already know it from growing up in a fed family.

These are real, struggling schools that we're talking about here, and it gets in the way of efforts to consider what might help students in those schools do better when IB advocates act like the experience of the outliers are anything close to the norm.

second PP doesn't make any sense.

First PP does make sense. I know of a military family that was in Edison's district. They had a junior in HS. He took the IB classes.... and then his family got orders to move to FL. They did not think they were going to be moving that year. Kid had one year finished of a two year IB course.... and now he has to move. Not great. AP would have served him much better.

SO -- if the focus is back on Mount Vernon HS (and not on IB vs. AP or military families or building a wall) -- has the Mount Vernon administration been involved in the ESOL school-within-a-school program currently piloting at Stuart HS? Are there enough ESOL students at Mount Vernon HS to warrant such a program?

I can absolutely get behind this. I recommend we create a special attendance island of garden apartments that would feed directly into West Springfield.

South Lakes had a larger graduating class in 2015 than either Langley or McLean, which FCPS ensured by redistricting several neighborhoods to South Lakes a while back. Check the FCPS archives and see how much they welcomed the redistricting to an IB school. Was a group like "Fairfax CAPS" ever formed to oppose a redistricting to an AP school?

Langley and McLean send more kids to Ivies, top privates and OOS schools than South Lakes, so it is not surprising more South Lakes students go to U.Va., particularly since South Lakes is so much bigger. There are probably more SL students going to VCU and NVCC, too, if you want to cite numbers.

Anyway, isn't this thread about Mount Vernon or at least the IB schools that, unlike South Lakes, are not surrounded almost entirely by AP schools?
