Why are so many Americans on disability?

Many do, but they are more likely to experience much longer times finding work, periods when they cannot work (someone on a vent is at high risk for all kinds of medical complications), it depends on their skills and what kinds of assets they had when they became disabled. Say you're an architect and you have spinal cord injury that leaves you paralyzed below the waist. First you're going to be out of work for an extended time to treat the injury (which may come with other injuries and complications) and rehab. If you're lucky enough not to have to depend on UHC to pay for rehab and can fork out extra money for the best possible program and sufficient time, you'll be better prepared to live and work independently. You can pay for the extras in terms of adaptive equipment and to modify your home. Because you were a senior member of your firm and maybe a partner, you get a lot of encouragement from your employer to come back. Now say you're a 27 yo who has a head injury, your mom is a single parent who lives in a one bedroom apartment. She takes you in, but you're hard to live with because your head injury has impacted your personality, behavior, memory it takes a toll on her, you're sleeping on the couch, once rehab has you walking and talking you're done, there's no intensive coaching to help you find work, you eventually get very low skilled work in a factory but then you have seizures and they're afraid of liability for a work injury and let you go.

Many people with congenital disabilities also live longer than they used to.

Thank you, someone has to pay for all of these freeloaders. This lady could get a job and get insurance from a job.

She currently does not work and she is receiving mental health treatment. She has bc as an implant which presumably she did not have when she conceived this child (she or else her husband has 2 additional kids diagnosed with autism who live in another household).

When I was 29, I had a mental breakdown. For a good year and a half my functioning was severely impaired, I cannot even describe it. I moved in with my parents and my mom helped get medicaid for me, I was pretty much a zombie, just sat and stared into space or slept following a stretch of 3-4 months when I was severely manic. The psychotropic drugs caused me to gain 60 lbs. They stopped the mania but triggered the depressive side of my illness. I absolutely believed my life was completely over. It took a long time but eventually I did go to work and moved out. I had a bout of severe depression several years later when I was in pretty much the same state. You cannot assume this woman's situation is permanent or the extent of her mental health symptoms on an ongoing basis.

It doesn't need to go viral. There's an abundance of contempt for people in need as it is. There are plenty of people in the WH who are sucking off the govt teat (KL for instance, not to mention her boss) doing absolutely no good for anybody.

Are you all equally mad about the earners at the other end of the spectrum exploiting every tax loophole possible?

You all are so gullible. Quit believing everything you see and hear online.

They never are. It’s maddening. They think it’s funny and smart to avoid taxes and run corrupt businesses. They just beg for approval from rich people and would never blame them. They have no self-respect.

“Illegals” don’t get disability. But they DO pay taxes. Congratulations, MAGA.

Exactly, and deporting them all is not going to make the people who are on disability employable.

I do not see why taxpayers owed you a monthly cash payment during this time. Healthcare maybe. A spot in a well run mental hospital with food provided perhaps. But cash?
