USA only country in the world where life does not come to a halt when it's soccer team plays in WC

Baseball is super boring too, moreso than soccer imho, yet thousands of fans watch, attend games, even go to spring training , triggers nostalgia, audience range from kids to grandpa-aged, etc.
Can't wait for a pitch click to move it along, but I digress...

I don't think "soccer is a boring sport" is an excuse.

Before now, soccer has never gained a lot of hype or traction in the media...I'm guessing it has a lot to do with ad revenue that the other pro sports team generate.
A bit of a catch-22....maybe if soccer matches were on TV or part of the daily sports report on the 6pm news, maybe it would trigger interest and thus people wanting to watch

+1

Many years ago, the NFL changed rules to increase scoring after doing a study that revealed viewer interest increased with increased scoring.

Some of those changes came about because of the original, now defunct, one season XFL in the early 2000s! In all the prime time NFL games now the players introduce themselves and say what college or HS they went to, and that was an XFL thing too. Helps you get to know the players more.

I’ve wondered if soccer hasn’t taken off here because it’s not advertiser friendly. You play for 45 minutes without stopping. No time for commercial breaks in there. They’ll do ads at the half but they also tend to do some game analysis at that time too so it’s not just a 15 minute ad extravaganza.

If I wanted to watch somebody try to score for 90 minutes, I would take them to a bar.

I love soccer but LMAO at DCUM trying to position soccer as the sophisticated and cosmopolitan sport.

It may be that in pockets of the U.S., but internationally it is not that at all.

Well, we aren't assassinating players for losing, so we are probably doing it wrong.

Can't believe Iran was allowed to run up the score like that. What a travesty.

The US England match was intense. I feel for England. Those players are getting destroyed by their fans for not beating the US. Everyone forgets the EPL schedule has been a nightmare and players are playing injured and exhausted. Harry Kane should have been rested. England needed fresh legs. Their substitutions were widely criticized. I'm sure this is the end of Southgate's term.

US midfield was legit fabulous until Weston got tired. No shame to England. Can’t believe Pulisic got MOTM over Tyler Adams. Ridiculous.

The flopping/cheating just reminds me that even with all the problems we have, I could not face living in a country whose culture involved complete distrust of institutions/people, haggling, corruption, etc.
