The power by Naomi alderman
Feminist science fiction In our time, Allie is a girl who is raped by her foster father and kills him with her powers before taking refuge in a convent. The “power” (women develop ability to pass electric power through their hands) emerges across the world and turns gender relations upside down. Societies around the world eventually become matriarchal. The power was first used for self defense but eventually to attack, torture, dominate and sometimes murder men and/or women without powers. Back in our time not too far off from now, a Midwest mayor whose daughter is developing the powers forms training camps for girls to learn how to wield their powers. Women in Moldova form similar camps and a president’s wife steps into take over the country. Allie discovers how to use her powers to heal and becomes an important religious leader. She has a major showdown with the president’s wife turned insurrectionist. Won’t say more but it is well written and exploration of gender relations and whether the world would necessarily be a more compassionate and ethical place with women in charge. |
I picked this up and haven't read it yet. Thank you for posting this-- I was worried that it was a bad impulse buy, but now I am excited to read it. Currently reading the Latecomers. |
| The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. Four seniors in assisted living run rings around the police to solve murders. |

A Restless Truth by Freya Marske. It's the sequel to A Marvelous Light, which was so charming. Also, the books are beautiful.

Ok, this sounds fun! |
So charming! Marske is on tumblr, fyi. (A recent post is a poster someone did for A Restless Truth, it’s very cool.) Neil Gaiman is also on tumblr, if you like his works. He answers a lot of questions. Marske- https://www.tumblr.com/fahye Gaiman- https://www.tumblr.com/neil-gaiman I imagine there are other authors, too, but those are the only ones I’ve encountered. They post pretty often. |
It's written by a comedian. Steven Spielberg has bought the rights. |
