Translation: as far as I know, my experience must be equivalent to that of people of color. Of course, I haven’t bothered to look at the mountains of evidence of systemic racism in literally every sector of American life, but I feel very confident sharing my opinion nevertheless. |
How about they are trying to avoid the problems of concentrated low income neighborhoods and so choose otherwise. People of all races do this - how do you think PG county formed? |
How is that a racial issue? I was mistaken as the nanny for years in Dupont circle as a young, white mom. yes I had to clarify but it seemed a fair assumption at a time when most of the moms were quite old and white in that neighborhood. In another setting (like most of the rest of America), they'd be mistaken for a grandma. There are reasons that people make assumptions based on generalizations based on trends. It's not malicious always, and can be easily clarified. |
Mistaking someone for a nanny isn’t racism. It really isn’t. |
I used to pick up my son’s black friend at his school sometimes on the way to pick up my son. How often do you think I was assumed to be that kid’s nanny? The fact that you claim not to understand this says a lot about you. |
Considering how many times I’ve been asked if I’m the nanny of my children who are Hispanic (they are adopted -FYI). Probably a lot. So maybe your assumption says more about you and your implicit bias. |
Were you in your 20s when you did that? Then I'd say sometimes. Were you frumpy and driving a minivan? Then you probably looked like a mom carpooling, but I might wonder if you were the nanny. Do people always come up and tell you what they assume? |
Wow, you are really committed to this. What makes you assume that the person PP mentioned was young, frumpy, or driving a minivan? No evidence at all. Many people of color have reported frustration with being taken for the nanny of their own kids. You seem committed to disbelieving them. There is a word for being committed to not believing people when they report their life experience. |
| And DCUM has devolved into, you know, DCUM. We have gone from Wilson enrollment to: Are nanny accusations racist? |
Regression to the mean girls. |
That is a fantastic line. You win the internet today! |
