Silver Spring ES question-- what is DCC ES #29?

Anonymous
I just checked the school locator on the MCPS website. We are currently zoned for Oakland Terrace ES, but in the notes it says that as of school year 2012-13, we'll be zoned for DCC ES #29. I'm assuming this must mean a new elem. school in the Down County Consortium, but I couldn't find info. on new schools on the website.

Anybody know more about this? Where's the new school going to be? Any other info? TIA!

It is the new McKinney Hills ES.

PP is right, but it's McKenney or McKenny Hills. There are a bunch of threads about it so you can search up with those terms and find out more.

The principle of ES #29 has an office in Oakland Terrce ES. You can call Oakland Terrce ES and talk to the new principle of #29, if you have any questions for the new ES #29

There's a map of the neighborhoods that will go to it at http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/planning/pdf/DCC29ES_AdoptedBoundary_Letter.pdf
which also notes where the school will be. It's under construction and due to open in August. Oakland Terrace is a wonderful school and we're seeing more than half of our students go to DCC 29 next year, so I'm sure it will be great too.

Do you have a neighborhood listserv? If so you should join. Our listserv has had regular update about the new school. I'm excited about it. I agree with the other poster thy you should call the new principal with questions. Btw it will have a new name in about a month!

Thanks everyone. Our neighborhood doesn't have a listserv (at least that I know of). I can't believe this is the first I'm hearing about this. It seems like MCPS would have sent something in the mail to the families that will be affected. Or did they and I just didn't get it? I guess I should read the Gazette, rather than throwing it in the trash each week . . .

I'm surprised you didn't get anything in the mail. Check out this website: http://oaklandterracepta.com/v2/dcc-29/ and this one: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/oaklandes/
Call the school to ask about Kindergarten orientation. Kyle Heatwole is the DCC #29 principal and you can find him on Twitter at @Heatwole29

Where do you live? I am surprised your neighbors aren't talking about it.

If you just moved into McKenney Hills/Carroll Knolls, there is a listserv. Here is the link to the Civic Association - you can join the listserv there - http://www.mhckcivic.org/join-us.html.

That's strange OP -- we've known about this for 2 years...that includes the year before our DD started kindergarten.
Will you have children that are actually IN SCHOOL next year when the school opens?
If not...that is probably why you had not been notified.
It is odd that you had not heard about it from neighbors...

this is pp 10:52...i wasn't being snarky...hope it didn't come off like it...it's just it's been the talk of our community for so long...wondering how someone may not have mentioned it...

Forest Estates/Forest Grove also have a listserv.

No, my son won't actually start kindergarten until the following school year. I'm sure that's why I haven't heard about it. But still, a new school affects everybody with young kids even if they're not old enough to attend yet, so I would have thought there would have been a mailer to all residents within the boundary. We don't live in any of the neighborhoods that have been named as having listservs and are barely, barely within the boundary, so that may also be why I haven't heard about it. Anyway, thanks for all the good info!

We're over east of Sligo Creek (I'm 20:57). There was lots about it in the news and Gazette last school year (probably before you were keyed in) and then since your DS won't be in K until next year you wouldn't have gotten the mailer. But, actually, there's no way for MCPS to know you're there with a kid unless you tell them (or am I wrong on that?).
