OT - How Often

Anonymous
We just had our 3.5 year old DD evaluated by OT. She has some sensory type issues and also some behavioral problems. We are working on the behavior problems at home and seeing some very good progress. After the initial evaluation, the OT suggested a two week intensive (daily OT for two weeks) followed by once or twice weekly sessions. Is this a typical treatment plan? Everyday seems much, but we obviously want to do what is best. As an aside, I find that professionals always want you to come as often as possible, but the real question is how much is too much and/or enough. TIA!

I think the intensive gives both the kid and the OT an opportunity to form the relationship, expectations, get to know the kid's strengths, weaknesses, etc. This was very helpful for our DD. As for the number of times per week after that, you could start with once and see if that was sufficient.

Well, I guess the real question is if you see improvement. Hopefully, your OT isn't trying to con you into coming for unneeded sessions.

Are there alternative classes or activities that might be less expensive that you could do in lieu of OT sessions?

Our SLP does a similar 2 week intensive program, usually in the summer to encourage developmental leaps, but I don't think she does it at the start of a new client relationship. In your shoes I might hold off until you figure out whether he or she is worth the money and then do it after there's a relationship.
