| Hi. My son is 7.5 non/verbal and sometimes he has problem in his sleep and his mood.I thought maybe a multivitamin with iron supplements could help him. Does anyone has a suggestion? |

When my son was having a lot of difficulty with speech, I started him on a probiotic because he was also having gastrointestinal issues. Around the same time, I also started him on a vitamin by Kirkman Labs called Spectrum complete. We also began a fish oil supplement. Luckily, my son started talking shortly after we started this and I can't really say what worked best. It may just be coincidence.
My son continues to have difficulty falling asleep, and his pediatrician recommended melatonin. We only give him that when he is really having trouble falling asleep, but it seems to work well. I would give it more often, but I worry about it becoming habit-forming. We only use it a couple times/week. Good luck! |

Is your son a picky eater? Is his diet limited? If so, he most likely needs a multivitamin and an omega supplement. Don't bother with the vitamins you get at the drug store. Like the PP I order my son's multi from Kirkman Labs. We used a flavored powder for a while until he just didn't like the taste anymore-- we mixed it with juice and water. Now that he can swallow pills he is taking a multi in small pill form. The Omega is crucial for regulation. I would also agree with the PP about a probiotic.
Read "What's Eating Your Child," by Kelly Dorfman. It has changed my sons life. We're not completely there yet but my son's regulation has improved significantly. You have good instincts about your child-- just do your homework as to what you give him. Also, make his bed more comfortable. We added a tempurpedic style foam pad (2 to 3 inches). We also added heavier blankets (not great in the warmer months). You might be surprised at how well the padding may work. Good luck!!! : ) |
| Sorry for my delay but thank you both for your answers. |
| @17:16- regarding your concerns about melatonin, we have recently been assured by two well-respected developmental pediatricians that it is safe to give it every night. We give it 30 mins before bedtime. It isn't habit forming |
