Wearing white before Easter?

Anonymous
So, with this incredible weather, I am ready to wear my spring/summer clothes. Growing up in Ohio, the old fashion rule was "no white (shoes) after labor day and before easter". I have a great pair of white dressy work sandals I would love to wear with my dressy business capri slacks, but I'm unsure whether that fashion rule still exists.

I hope not as I plan to wear white jeans today. On the other hand, I don't care if it's proper or not.

Yes. And it's no white shoes before Memorial Day.

It's not white clothes, it's white shoes. Not that you care.

Well, crap. (this is OP). Duh!! I knew that - and yet, for some reason I woke up thinking the rule was Easter. Well, that just makes it worse. Seriously - why the no white rule? And, at 41, do I really care? hmmmmm.

white shoes are ugly anyway

No white Shoes, Skirts, pants, or linen. In the South it's Easter and in the north it's memorial day.

You answered your own question. It's 2012.

No white shoes until after the Mayan apocalypse.

the rules still exists to some people but others ignore them. FWIW white shoes are just plain tacky/ugly/unflattering. white pants are different - i think those can be worn by whomever can pull them off. i dont break out anything white pants until easter.

in the greater dc area no one qualifies for fashion guru. do whatever you want - you certainly dont need affirmation from hollywood for ugly people.

Forget the white sandals, this is your real fashion problem.

Of course the rule still exists. Why would it not? Just because you look around town and some people choose not to follow it? People chew with their mouths open too but it doesn't mean it is proper etiquette just because it is 2012. Would you wear seersucker in December if the temperature weren't an issue? Why not?

No patent leather either. Why not wear nude shoes (but not patent) with your white pants?

I agree that white shoes are hideous but white sandals don't have to be.

You do need to wait, however.

Sweetie, do what makes you happy. No sandal police in DC, thank god.
