Seeking Rental in Bethesda Area

Anonymous
We are an American family currently living in Italy and preparing to move to the Bethesda this summer. It will be our first time living in the area so we are trying to learn as much as we can from a distance about the schools and local community. We are hoping to find a home with at least three bedrooms, an easy commute to the Naval Hospital, good schools (our kids are 6 and 9), and a family friendly neighborhood. We will arrive in July so I know this posting may seem too early, but we are realizing that things in the area turn over quickly and thought it might be wise to put feelers out in advance. If you know of a home in Bethesda, Kensington, or Chevy Chase that will be coming on the rental market this summer (either one that you own or one that you are currently renting, but plan to vacate), could you please contact us at luciamorgan@yahoo.com. We have friends in the local area who can tour homes for us. Thank you!

P.S. If you have suggestions about other locations that we should consider, please share. Same goes for reliable property managers or realtors who might be able to help us search in this area.

Bethesda Place Apartments on Woodmont Avenue in the heart of Bethesda has rentals, and is in an ideal location.

Thanks for your response. We'll look into it, but ideally we would like be in a single family home with a bit of yard. It doesn't have to be a huge yard, but I love to garden and would like some space for the kids to play or be within walking distance of a park.

What's your budget? That might help narrow down the search.

Your budget is going to be a big restraint. In Bethesda homes rent for $4,000-5,000 per month. If you look in places like Silver Spring or Kensington then you could probably find a home for $2,300 to $3,000 per month.

We were hoping to spend between $3200-$3600.
Thanks!

OP here again. Just curious...how would you compare Kensington to Silver Spring in terms of family neighborhoods, sense of community, schools, and diversity (we are a multicultural family)?

Thanks!

I think you can find information through the Naval Hospital and NIH about local rental housing. I know our next-door neighbor landlord lists his property there. (It would fit your needs, but I'm not sure when the current family is leaving.) Good luck!

OP here. We are trying to get a flier posted at the Naval Hospital and have been trying to get the word out through friends there, but I hadn't thought about NIH. Thanks for that suggestion. If you find out any information about your neighbors house, please feel free to contact us

I would look on MilitaryByOwner. You can search for homes by proximity to bases (Bethesda Naval,in your case). That's how we found our place.

Have you looked on Craigslist for Bethesda rentals? Most landlords of rental homes advertise on Craigslist.

Kensington is a very very easy commute to Bethesda Naval.

The area called "east Bethesda" (east of Wisconsin Ave, bordering chevy chase) is a great location for commuting to the Naval Hospital, and there are lots of 3BR homes with a small but nice yard - very family friendly and good schools, plus parts are walkable to shops, restaurants in Bethesda. Not sure how you'd go about finding rentals, though - maybe ask your friends to drive around the neighbor and jot down realtor names on for rent or for sale signs, and call them?

You can also search house rentals on Trulia and HomesDatabase.

Stop scaring the OP. There are 19 3+ BR single-family homes available now in Bethesda and Chevy Chase with asking rents less than OP's budget of $3600. And those are just the ones listed with realtors.
