balduccis. seriously. they do beautiful cakes and can copy any design and the insides are so scrumptious. and their prices are totally reasonable - i paid $90 for a custom decorated cake (they copied a design off a onesie in great detail0 to feed 50 people.

Cake Love in downtown Silver Spring.

There's a bakery in Woodmoor, in the downtown strip of Four Corners shopping center.

I like Firehook's lemon/raspberry cake.

Chicago Bakery on Georgia Ave: (301) 949-2277

Every year for my birthday, my husband gets me a strawberry/banana cake from there that is just perfect. so delicious, not overly fancy/rich, not a sheet cake. Mmm, just thinking about it now...

As much as I appreciate Warren Brown as a role model (having ditched the practice of law to be a baker) I've always been a little disappointed by the products at Cake Love.

totally agree! the cakes are so dry and really lack flavor. i would vote giant over cakelove.

That sounds delicious! Where is this on Georgia?

i'd go for whole foods -- ubiquitous, tasty, and not too expensive. cakelove is nasty.

Cake Love has lost its touch and it's just as expensive as Fancy Cakes.

I concur for Whole Foods.

Seriously? It is terrible. Fake-tasting cakes, greasy/Crisco-type icing. Also, lots of artificial colors.

Bleah.

Honestly, one of the best birthday cakes we had was from Giant. That said, Stella's is good: http://www.stellasbakeryonline.com/

It's good for doughnuts and other homey type treats, I wouldn't go there for a cake. If you were willing to go to Rockville I recommend Les Delices--French baker, super delicious.
