Summer Vacation ideas with a 1yo and a 3yo?

We just recently moved to the DC area. Looking for summer vacation ideas that we can drive to.

Some places we are considering are the Outer Banks, Hershey, Jersey Shore, and VA Beach/Williamsburg.

Summer in Williamsburg will be really hot and not that interesting for little kids. IMO, Hershey is more of a weekend trip. With kids, I like Jersey shore ecause of the boardwalk over Outer Banks. My kids liked camping when they were little. That might be fun for a weekend.

The historic sites in Philly are fun with kids and good to walk between with strollers.

Too hot and too young to appreciate. A very easy place for these young children is Bethany Beach. You can stay in Sea Colony high rises on the beach with pools. Easy and rent a low floor spot with a patio. You can stroller to the little town. Kingsmill in Williamsburg is also easy with little ones. There is a nice pool [indoor and outdoor].

I'm obviously different than many of the posters. I think beach vacations with children that young are too stressful and too much work if you plan to make the beach the highlight of the trip. There's too much stuff to pack up, you have to worry about too much sun, you'd have to worry about the 3 year and the water and running off plus there is the cigarette smoke from others. I would much rather do a place like Williamsburg, pick a great resort or hotel/ suites type of place with a nice pool, go shopping some, go to Busch Gardens and do the Elmo part plus some other kid friendly rides, ride down to Va Beach one day and walk the boardwalk, put feet in, do putt-putt, etc.

Nemacolin in PA. It is a super family friendly resort and they have camp (child care) for all ages of kids. For little kids they have pony rides, a zoo and of course a pool. There are also playgrounds. You can opt for the 2 bedroom townhouses which are somewhat removed from the main action (the Links townhouses are walkable to the zoo animals though.) There are hotel amenities in the town homes as well. We asked my 3 year old what the favorite part of her trip was and......it was the child care center with different toys. Go figure.
