| Can you recall when it was? And would you mind revealing the school? We are trying to decide what to do about an admit and I'm delying calling the school at which he was waitlisted to ask what they might be willing to tell us. TIA. |
| You should absolutely call the school that you are w/l at to ask about the chances, etc. Schools get these sorts of calls all the time. It will also communicate to the school your interest. |
| WL at Sidwell for pre-K. The WL letter said to call the admissions office around 4/02 for possible openings. Should we contact the admissions office sooner or wait till 4/02 to make the call? |
| Got a call last year ath the beginning of April. |
This was our experience at Beauvoir: DC was W/L. We did not call ( restrained ourselves), but did send the card back indicating we wanted DC to stay on WL. We got a call the day after the deadline to respond to the acceptance offers. DC was offered a spot as soon as one was turned down. Good luck and hang in there. I know how gut wrenching it is. Whatever you do, do not F**k it up now by becoming a PITA. Restrain yourself even if it is the hardest thing you have ever had to do. |
They ask YOU to call them, OMG that is rude. If a spot becomes available they should graciously call you. What are you supposed to do , kep calling and hope that they pick up? |
Thank you for this valuable reminder -- I needed it and appreciate it. The only complicating factor is that we need to make a decision about the school my kid did get into. we are trying to make an independent decision about that one, but it is hard to get over the hope of the other school. it IS hard. thanks. |
This is actually a good way for them to assess who on the WL is truly interested and not waste their time calling people. It's another hoop to jump through but when you have the volume of applicants they do all weeding options help. |
OH, in THAT case : Do NOT call your 1st choice school and tell them that you have another offer. Some schools will honor their Assoc. of Indep. Schools agreement and not accept your WL accept if you tell them that you have made a deposit to another school. It is an honor bound thing. So, be very careful here. I would not raise attention with either school, just mail in the deposit and contract and see of you hear about 2nd school before June 1st (May 31st being last day to cancel a contract without owing full tuition for year. Send in the contract and wait. If you do not hear from 1st choice by late May, no loss. Bo NOT turn down an accept hoping for a WL to work out. Many times it will not. Do not assume that the school is looking at your DC in isolation. The AD's in this town have to have good working relationships. No AD can make it for long if she lets other schools get sent up the river. Keep your deliberations to yourself. |
Above poster: please explain why it is a "waste of time" for some one who is earns a salary to call parents who are patiently waiting and have expressed their interest. A school that takes this view is its own worst enemy in my view. Unless, of course you want a school FULL of envelop pushers. Is that the purpose of the "screening" ? |
Because my guess is that they have responsibilities that include but are not limited to calling and following up with parents. Of the four schools we were waitlisted at, one had us set up a time to call them and the three others called us when we moved off the list. |
What agreement are you talking about? I thought that you still have the right to withdraw after you pay a deposit (though you lose it), but before the drop dead date in May, June or July. I know in NYC, the schools will not accept a student off a waitlist after they put down a deposit, so you have to use subterfuge, but I wasn't aware of anything like that in DC or the AISGW. |
| We had a deposit at another school when my DC was accepted off of a waitlist. We lost our deposit, but it was no big deal. It was a quick turn around though. Once she was off the WL, I think it was a day or two that we had to get the deposit in them. |
| Sorry. It s/b "in to them" not "in them". |
| Our DS got off the WL at GDS at the end of May one year. We had written a note to the AD right after we got the WL letter stating that the school was our first choice for our child and we were really hoping a spot would free up. |
