Please tell me EXACTLY which Star Wars movie my 7 year old should watch

Anonymous
My 7 year old is very interested and I want to help him. We don't watch TV or movies but are not against it either. No attacks please. What is the easiest Star Wars movie to start with? Not too scary or violent if possible. TIA.

I am a purest, so I would start with episode IV, A New Hope (the original from 1977). This is the one my son watched first.

The well known 'Star Wars' actually begins with Episode 4 'A New Hope'. This was the film from 1977 that started it all and is considered the classic one to watch first.

Then people often watch episodes 5, 6, and then back to 1,2,3. This is the order they were also released in and provides the best story line.

There are a few dark scenes in the movies, so like any film you should watch it with your children to talk them through the scenes. Our nephew waited until he was 6 to watch them, which he thoroughly enjoyed despite knowing the story line already from books and friends.

IIRC, 4,5,6 are fine, as is 1. 2 gets a little a more violent and 3 definitely does. I think some parents wait to watch 2 and 3, some parents skip past scenes that have too much graphic violence, and some parents feel their kids can handle it. YMMV.

Definitely start with #4. My 7 year old has seen them all. He seemed to be most scared by #1 and #3.

You could also read the books instead....

#4. It's the original, it is less violent, and it requires no knowledge of prior ones.

Thank you. Pardon the ignorant question, but where does the Clone Wars cartoons fit into all this?
Anonymous
Clone wars have some of the same characters as the 1-3 movies. Its takes place between movies 2 and 3.

As others have stated, tart with the original one released in '77 (#4). Then progress to #5 and #6. If you start with #1-3, it takes the surprise away from #4-7.

Ooops - meant "takes away the surprise from #5/6"

(I am a purest and for me, this will always be #1!)

OP, I've found reviews on Common Sense Media helpful:

OP, have you considered beginning with ET and then going to Star Wars?

Maybe it's just me, but I remember being completely flipped out by ET as a kid. (actually, so did Empire Strikes Back....)

I found ET terribly upsetting when I saw it in the theaters as a kid (age 8). The part where he is held by the government made me cry, and I still remember it vividly 30 years later.

Star Wars didn't bother me at all, and my older son, who is pretty sensitive, liked episode IV when he saw it at age 5. I wouldn't show him ET until at least 8 or 9.

Obviously every kid is different, but thought it was worth mentioning.
