We bought a brand new house a few months ago, and we love our new home except for one problem. Wolf spiders keep getting in our finished basement (it's our family room) very frequently. We've done a lot of research and know that's what kind of spiders they are, that they do bite but aren't really venomous. But I am TERRIFIED of spiders. I have NO idea how they are getting in. It was just once every few days we'd have to get rid of one, but tonight over the course of a few hours, we have had to get rid of FIVE of them. I seriously don't know if I will be able to sleep tonight after this because I am still shaken from having to deal with them. (the first few of them a friend was here to help me out, and the last ones were vacuumed up because I can't bring myself to get close enough to them to do anything else.) Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do? If nothing else, tell me a funny story or something to calm me down. Please? |
They aren't getting in, there was a nest somewhere. Once this generation dies out, you'll be much better off.
A funny story: The spider is terrified of you. You are huge! |
lol thank you! you're right.. How do I find this nest? Is there a way to do that or do I just have to wait? This is seriously making me crazy!
|
I feel for you, OP. I hate them, too. I just looked up wolf spiders, those might be the ones we have in our garage, too. I am about to call the exterminator but I am also afraid of chemicals!
I'm in a terrible bind. |
Natural Wolf Spider Control
To get rid of wolf spiders, the focus should be on exclusion. Most of the time, spiders this big well enter through an open or poorly sealed door. If you are finding wolf spiders in the house, you should check the weather stripping around all the exterior doors, as well as the basement door if you have one. Nine times out of ten, they will enter the home through the garage. Use sticky traps on the inside of the garage door to catch them before they can enter the interior. Check all windows to make sure they are screened and sealed. Don't forget to make sure all doors are sealed also. Place glue boards on the interior of the garage. Garages are poorly sealed and the starting point for many pest problems Remove potential nesting sites. Wolf spiders will take shelter under just about anything. Ensure leaf and plant debris is kept far away from the house. The wolf spider is unable to survive in a home environment and will probably die under your couch unless you are unable to catch it. It is also best to avoid smashing them. Many times, females will carry a large egg sac and stepping on it can cause an explosion of hundreds of baby spiders all over your floor. If you have a rogue wolf spider running around the home, place a cup over its body and wedge a piece of paper between it. Catch and release – wolf spiders are scary, but 100 percent beneficial to have in any garden or landscape. |
This shit works and is safe indoors and is rated fine for food prep areas http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/bifen-it-p-226.html |
This was super helpful! Thank you! (the part about not smashing them is kind of scary actually since we did smash one earlier.... so that has me concerned) I am going to take this advice thank you! |
Put glue traps near the doors to see if that is how they are getting in. |
If you smashed and didn't see a lot of small spiders spilling out, I think you're fine. Good luck! Get rid of those spiders! |
So I would have literally seen tiny spiders going all over the place? I figured there were eggs that would have to hatch or something.. Thank you.. I feel better about that now.. |
I am going to do that tomorrow.. that's a really good idea. |
Right, I don't think the eggs can survive outside the body if it wasn't time. You'd have to smash at exactly the right moment. |
It is bad luck to kill spiders |
I didn't know that, but the only bad luck I've had so far is more spiders! |
I moved to a new house about two years ago and had this problem. I am TERRIFIED of spiders as well. Those wolf spiders are huge!!! I have a panic attack if I see one. I mostly see them in the garage, but sometimes there will he one in my basement. I think they are coming in through the unfinished part of my basement, possibly from the dump pump, or through the vent from my fireplace.
My solution was to call Armored Pest. I had the guy come out and he sprays the basement, first floor, garage and outside along the perimeter. I'm in Arlington, and they guy told me that the wolf spiders live in mulch. Was your yard just mulched? I'm knocking on wood right now as its getting warmer and I need to schedule another appointment with them. The thought of hundreds of baby spiders in my house could send me to the loony bin! As long as we keep up with the spray (it dries within minutes and there is no smell and is safe for kids and pets) I never see live spiders in the house. |
