We recently moved to Virginia and are currently renting at Pentagon City. We love the area and are now considering buying a condo nearby. However, I am slowly discovering that school options here appear not to be that great. We love traditional schooling and are attracted to Arlington Traditional (negative: unlikely to win lottery i.e. get in) and St Rita Catholic School in Alexandria (negative: we are atheists; the school doesn't have the bus). Any other options or advice on the topic? Our DC is only 6 months but real estate decision will likely be made within a year.
there might be a 2nd ATS near you soon.
FWIW - we live in that neighborhood and - after touring ATS and looking at other schools - enrolled our son in Oakridge, the neighborhood school. He is now in 1st grade. Wonderful school, great community, very active PTA. Can't say enough good things. And, the neighborhood is wonderful too.

Thanks a lot for the responses. Oakridge is a definitive possibility (I forgot to mention it) so I am glad to hear positive feedback from there.
I haven't heard about ATS expansion. This is great news, too, though probably due to increased population which would keep chances of getting in (at least from numbers I read on this forum) around 10%. Again, thanks for your help! |
I've read some very positive posts about Oakridge on these boards, though I've also read not-so-great things about Gunston, if you're thinking long term. There are some really great neighborhoods down in that area. I probably wouldn't do Catholic if you're atheist.

We've heard many stories of families who like Oakridge. Truth is, with a six month old child, you've got quite a ways till they are school age and if your concern is Gunston, that's at least a decade away - things may change in terms of the school and/or school options between now and then.
