Pinkeye

Anonymous
I got pinkeye. My daughter's pediatrician told me to use my daughter's drops if I ended up getting it, so I'm using those and didn't go to my own doctor. (I'd call my doctor and ask but he's moved to a concierge practice and I'm not a member so not only can I not get a quick answer I can't get a quick appointment.) Question - do I need to get rid of ALL my cosmetics, or just my eye makeup? I did some web searching and found different suggestions. If you've had pinkeye, what did your doctor suggest you do with your cosmetics? I hate to get rid of ALL my makeup as I'm on a pretty strict budget right now, but if it's absolutely necessary then I will. Thanks.

Not an answer to your question, but if you need a quick doctor's appointment, you can always try one of those walk in clinics. Many insurances cover them.

So, I had pink eye 2 weeks ago. Not a bad case of it. It was viral and lasted 2 days.

Totally forgot to throw out my makeup or clean anything. Didn't even occur to me. I was a complete ditz about it.

Pink eye came back. Shocking, I know.

Anyway. Get rid of mascara and eye pencil definitely. Use rubbing alcohol to clean any brushes. I've read mixed things about eye shadow. Some sources say wipe the shadow with rubbing alcohol to wipe off that top layer of powder. I don't know how effective that is.

Just curious how long is pink eye contagious for? My DC got it yesterday and started the drops from her doctor right away. I am keeping her home today but forgot to ask how many days she needs to be home for. I read 24 hours but will all symptoms clear after that or will they just no longer be contagious.

If it's viral, until the redness and/or oozing is gone. If it's bacterial, 24 hours after using drops. But I have to tell you, schools and daycares are pretty strict about pink eye. If it's still visible, they may require a note from the doctor to prove it's not contagious.

I know you got drops, but are you certain it's bacterial? Our doctor gave us drops when it clearly wasn't bacterial. (http://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/conjunctivitis.htm) Then he wrote on her note to take back to school that she couldn't return until the redness was gone. WTF?

Conjuctivitis
Conjuctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is a type of eye infection that is highly contagious and very unpleasant to have. It causes the eye to become inflamed, crusted, and sore. Many people treat conjunctivitis by applying a small amount of breast milk to the affected eye. A particular antibody in the breast milk, called immunoglobulin A, prevents the pink eye bacteria from attaching to the mucosal surface of the eye. This limits the growth of the bacteria, helping to end the eye infection.

If you develop pinkeye, simply squirt a little breast milk directly onto the surface of your eye. Lift your eyelid slightly to help the breast milk circulate underneath. Continue this treatment three times a day for a couple of days, or until the eye infection has cleared. If your symptoms persist or worsen, though, seek medical advice.

Eye makeup, especially any liquids (mascara, eyeliner, etc.) needs to be thrown out, according to my eye dr.

And where am I supposed to find breast milk? Does someone want to come over and squirt some into my eye?

op just curious what drop did your doc prescribe? my ds is using ciproflxacin ophthalmic solutions 0.3%. I have contracted pink eye from my DS too and won't be able to have anything called in from me PCP as she is on vacation. Wondering if it is okay if I just use his drops. I can't get out to urgent care b/c my younger DS is at home sick with a fever. Thanks.

Mine is something called polymyxin b sulfate and trimethoprim ophthalmic solution. I would just use whatever they gave you for ds.

There is also OTC pinkeye medication- does that work?? I am curious as I don't have health insurance right now. I also don't have pinkeye, but I've gotten it several times in the past.
Also, anytime I've gotten it- I've DEFINITELY thrown away mascara and eyeliner. I've kept everything else- even eye shadow.
