If you had 50k to start a business, what would you do and why?

This is 50k of free money, not a loan. In this scenario you are not relying on the income from this business right away. Say you are a SAHM but want to work for yourself when you return to the workforce, but it will never be your bread and butter. If it is very profitable, great, but marginally profitable is fine.

Food truck business.

Forgot to answer why. Because 50k isn't a lot of money and food trucks are popular now. I think you could do decent business if you served something different or serviced an underserved area.

So does your scenario mean you really only sort of want to work at the business? Any new business requires a tremendous amount of time and effort to get off the ground.l I would start a dog daycare/cage free boarding place--pets are a growth industry and fun to work with.

OP here. No, in this scenario you do all the of start-up leg work.

Perhaps paying down the mortgage would be smarter choice. The interest you save will be way more "profitable" in the long run.

Life coaching business.

Why: Can do it from home, can control hours/workflow, low overhead

How: Identify a very narrow niche area of people who (a) interest you AND (b) can afford to pay for your services. Invest in real training to become certified. Then be thoughtful about branding and marketing to build your business. Don't limit yourself to DC -- aim to work nationwide by phone.

I like the food truck idea. Flexible hours and locations. I do not believe people actually use life coaches. Seems silly that someone would know better than you how you should live your life. Hard sell, that one.

I would do a unique good truck - maybe smoothies and salads in a really cute truck and I'd roam the smaller outer neighborhoods (Bethesda) instead of only hanging on K street. And id market to school for fundraisers, etc - like, take the truck over for the end of school Party and kids can buy their lunch...

A couple years ago - BEFORE the grand opening of Gtown cupcake, a friend and I looked onto a cupcake delivery service quite seriously - she had school aged kids and swore that moms would love to have customized (ballerina, soccer, Elmo) allergy-free cupcakes dropped off to schools for the requisite school birthday party for the class...

Rooms separated by a really nice coffee bar with big windows so parents can continue watching kids - I envision cafe with room for parents to get on their laptops and work or hang out with other parents. Also has a totally separate cafe for parents with kids. Playspace also has classrooms for art and gym classes and membership or single entry is available. Also has a good children's bookstore.
