Is it because of the Maryland marriage bill passing? Why are there so many haters? Why can't you live and let live? Are loving relationships really that upsetting to you people? The objections that come up against gay marriage/relationships are the same as those that were made in the 50s and 60s against black/white marriage -- the so called "mixing of the races." Now no one would ever object to that -- even on an anonymous forum. Can't you see it's the same thing? Lordy be -- let's evolve a little here, people! |
Thank Rick Santorum. He's showing what a great job he'll do of bringing Americans together to face our collective challenges, of representing ALL citizens, of fostering respect for one another.
Santorum 2012! |
No it is just someone trolling with an agenda. I actually think is someone who is pro-Gay rights stirring the pot to make the other side look like idiots. |
No one is hating anyone on the thread you are referring to. People are entitled to differing opinions and I think it has been respectful. If you want to live in a homogenous society, there is always either of the Korea's. However, you might not fit because Korean acceptance of LGBT is a lot less progressive than here in the US. I'm sorry it upsets you that people think differently than you, but this is America, get used to it. BTW, gay people don’t bother me in the slightest, but I do have the capacity to intellectualize without judgment that other people do not share my same beliefs and I accept that everyone does not have to think just like me. Part of being an accepting and open person is being able to see all sides of an argument and knowing that people come from diverse back grounds. |
And part of being human is learning that prejudice is an infantile response to fear.
|
To a point. But there comes a point where you move beyond "I must be tolerant of beliefs that I disagree with" to "These beliefs are abhorent and destructive to the very concept of decency and tolerance, and I must take a stand against them." Racism, sexism and discrimination against homosexuals are on the latter side of the line. In other words, tolerance does not require that you tolerate intolerance. |
Did you miss the interracial relationship thread? |
Well said PP, reminds me of quote in the American President, "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free". |
OP here -- I'm not suggesting anyone should be arrested for expressing offensive views. I'm just thinking that it's mean and small-minded and hating to spew such garbage about people who love people of their same gender. And I doubt Jeff -- who by the way does not have to allow any and all speech on this forum as he is not a state actor -- would allow threads saying things like "i don't think black people should be allowed to have the same rights as white people" etc. |
Why is race being brought into sexuality? Why can't these be separated? |
race is not the same as gay. Nature and religous doctrine never are against race they are against gay. |
There was a time where both "nature and religious doctrine" were used against certain races as well as against interracial marriage. |
Please confine your comments to subjects you know something about. The anti-miscegenation movement was chock-full of sweaty bible-quoting nutjobs. Plenty of arguments about the "unnaturalness" of race mixing, too. People can (and do) use the bible to justify pretty much any outrageous discriminatory and downright cruel notion that pops into their head. |
Stop bringing race into discussions of sexuality! They are two separate things and blending the two does not help, especially when you make flat-out untrue statements like "now no one would ever object to" interracial marriages. Racism didn't end with the end of Jim Crow. You're way off base. Please discuss the fight for gay rights on its own merits without co-opting the American Civil Rights Movement. |
It is the same reason there was an upsurge in racism around the time of desegregation. |
