Kids travelling & ID

Anonymous
Hi,

My son & I are about to take his first flight. What kind of ID, if any, does a 5 yr old need at an airport?

Thanks.

None, under 16, assuming you're traveling domestically. If he has a different last name from you, though, you might carry a copy of his birth certificate.

My daughter has a different last name from me. When we travel with her father, there's never been a question -- they share the same last name. The one time I flew with her without him, they did ask me about her name, but I happened to have her passport with me and just showed that. Even if I hadn't had the passport, I didn't get the sense that it would be an issue after I just explained it.

If he does have a passport or other ID, it wouldn't hurt to take it.

Absolutely nothing. Just finished our 5th flight with our young kids and the only time we needed anything was when they were lap kids to prove they were under 2 (and even then I don't think we were ever forced to show their birth certificate. ). TSA agent today asked our DD her name, but thatwasall.

DD had to have a passport for a trip so we take that. We also take a paper like this filled out in case we need it: http://www.deliciousbaby.com/travel/family-travel-tips/travel-documents/emergency-information/

It depends on the airline. Call to check it out.

I flew with my 4 year old two weeks ago. No one asked for any id.
