My 7 year old recently saw Pokemon for the first time (much to my chagrin). He really likes it. His tv shows have been pretty limited but I suppose at some point this will evolve as he gets older.
I remember this show being really popular over 10 years ago b/f I had kids. Do kids still watch this? I'm horribly out the loop. What are kids watching these days? |

I've got a 10-year-old DS. He went through a big Pokemon phase. Mostly, he just liked collecting cards. He watched the show occasionally. I never understood the appeal since it seemed so poorly animated.
Now, he's very into Legos, mostly Ninjago. He doesn't watch much tv, except for Caps games, but instead likes to watch YouTube videos of videogames, mostly Mario stuff or Skylander. He actually just watches people playing the games do he can learn all the right moves. I find it bizarre, but he likes it. |
| Pokemon is still big in my kids' schools. |
| I have three boys 3, 6 and 8 and they are very into Pokemon-they watch one episode a week-Sat morning-the animation has nothing to do with the popularity of the show or other Jap animation type shows-they like the battle strategies. A very simple and innocent cartoon. Not sure what your issue is |

The Pokemon phase started with my son at age 6 and is still going strong at 9. He collects the cards, reads the books, watches the show and plays the video games. It appeals to his sense of wanting to sort and categorize information. He likes to memorize what each Pokemon does, what type it is, what its HP is, etc. and he likes the strategy involved, and he likes to discuss all of this with other kids. To me it is similar to my brother's childhood obsession with baseball cards. I have no problems whatsoever with the content of the show or the video game. It isn't violent (the Pokemon "battle" but in a sports kind of way, and no one ever gets hurt), there are strong girl characters, and it teaches lessons about hard work, perseverance, loyalty, friendship etc.
And Jigglypuff is sooooooo cuuuuuute. |

My 6 yo son is big into Pokemon and probably has been for the last 8 months or so. There are some movies/DVDs out there and Cartoon Network has a TV show in the mornings I think. My son watches it maybe once/week on Sat. mornings if we are around.
I personally prefer Pokemon over some of the other shows (superhero ones, etc) as it is pretty tame from a violence standpoint. |
