Recently, I've been in the company of two different people who have said that they are Republicans because they're selfish. I didn't ask for clarification, because they are friends of friends, and I didn't want to get into it with people I barely know. I suppose they meant that their taxes would be lower under GOP leadership. I'm fairly certain that they won't meet the income requirements for the proposed tax increases, but it's possible that they do. Otherwise, they're misinformed, because taxes have not gone up for most people under this administration.
In the past, all the Republicans I have met have always have talked about trickle down economics and how stronger free market principles would help everyone. It didn't make that much sense to me, but I could see how someone could subscribe to that logic. Maybe some of them didn't really believe it, but it could make sense.
I just was really turned off to hear these people say that they care nothing about their fellow citizens. Have you heard others say this? Is it normal to say you're Republican because you don't care about anyone but yourself? It doesn't seem like a good strategy to win supporters.
