Are any K classes in MCPS doing addition or subtraction? |
Ours are doing addition. Started with figures but now working with traditional write one number on top of the other and write the answer below the line. Only with single digits, though. |
Single digit addition and subtraction. Counting to 100, money, measurements, graphs, counting by 10s. |
OP here. Thanks, that's interesting. My kid's K class is not doing much in math that I can see. We haven't received any unit assessments at all. Is anybody else getting unit assessments? |
There are no longer unit assessments in math in kindergarten under Curriculum 2.0. The focus is on formative assessments (teachers taking data in a variety of ways to get a picture of what students know and can do). |
FYI, my DD does not bring much work home from Math so we were wondering what she was doing and thought that she was not doing much. We eventually found out via discussions with our DD that she was doing counting to 100 and counting by 10s. No paperwork but we were finally able to figure out that she was getting math and retaining it. |
11:15, paper/pencil worksheets would not be best practice for kindergarteners anyway. They should be using lots of manipulatives, drawing out strategies (which might possibly only be happening in journals or on whiteboards), and orally explaining their reasoning to their teacher. The teacher should be communicating this progress to you in some way, though, whether through narrative comments or presented some way in a data notebook that is sent home once per quarter. |
