Perhaps a weird question - cheese sub

Anonymous
I love cheese sandwhiches. I have had a cheese sandwhich several times a week for my whole life. Probably not the healthiest thing, but it makes me happy.

I used to love this place in Foggy Bottom but it closed and I've never been able to find another amazing cheese sub. I get: hoagie/roll/whatever you call it, provolone cheese and mayo.

The bread needs to be chewy and dense. The cheese can't be too sharp.

Any suggestions for the NW or Bethesda area?

Taylor has great hoagies. Don't know if you can get plain cheese there but it's worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually recently tried Taylors - it was pretty good, but definitely not what I am looking for. Their bread was covered in sesame seeds and their sandwiches were rather fussy - lots of ingredients.

If you are willing to travel, try Mangialardo's at 13th and Penn SE or Litteri's in the old city market comples by 6th & Florida NE (1 block north of FL). Excellent italian style cheese subs. Much more filling than Taylor's.

BreadLine would probably be to your liking. I think I know the place you were talking about in FB -- was it a small grocery store?

There's a Liquor Deli at Dupont Circle (at the corner of Q and Connecticut, east side) that used to have the most amazing cheese sub/sandwich. They used a few different kinds of cheese, lettuce on good bread, but the best part was they used a delicious chutney instead of mayo. I still get cravings for that sandwich and must have eaten it at least 2x a week when I was pregnant with my first child. Sorry I don't know if the Liquor/Deli is still there or not, just had to share their recipe!

Thanks so much for the recs! Will definitely try them out.

I tried this place today:

It was actually pretty close to what I am looking for but not quite right.

The place in FB was La Prima in 2000 Penn. It closed years ago though - I went there as a student at GWU.

I just looked it up-they're still there. It's the Connecticut Avenue Wine/Liquor/Deli. I might have to make my way over there tomorrow and get a cheese sandwich, now that I can't stop thinking about it.

The deli in the liquor store at Q and CT (DuPont Circle) is no longer there. . The store is still there, but no deli anymore.

Too funny. I constantly have a problem with my favorite cheese subs: people look at me like I'm crazy. "No meat!?!"

OP, I know there is nothing like a delicious meal that you don't have to prepare yourself, but... for this very specific and easy item, wouldn't it make more sense to scout out a bakery that makes really good rolls? Bring a few to work, with a few slices of cheese and a small jar of mayo and you've got your lunches for the week.

La Prima closed! So sad. I loved that place. I always got genoa salami, peperoncini mayo, on ciabatta. I'd been meaning to stop by for old times' sake.

Anyway, I know what you mean, they had really great subs. I think it was the bread to mayo ratio they had just right.

So, this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but i had a to die for sandwich at Paul, by the Archives metro station. Amazing french baguette with cheese and butter. Yum. French not italian, but superb!

Might be a bit far for you to travel, but I bet Twinbrook Deli could do this.
