Safe paint for baby

Anonymous
After having some work done around the house I now need some painting done. I am trying to find out about having paint used that does not have a strong odour as I have a baby around the house. I have asked various painters about this to no avail - they all look at me blankly. Surely I am not crazy - there is something out there that either already comes in the cans of paint or that you can add to paint to reduce fumes or smell right? If you can help please let me know~~

Tell them you want VOC Free paint.
Duron makes one, I believe it's called their Genesis line. Most painters don't really know about the environmental and healthier paint options---I've had my share of experiences explaining this to a few. You don't want to add something to the paint to mask the fumes as the whole reason there is a smell is because of the paints chemical makeup. It's really bad for your baby to be around these fumes.
There's a Magazine out there called Natural Home. Look it up online or buy it at B&N. They have lots of adds in the back for this sort of thing if you want more options. VOC free paint costs a bit more, but it's still doable.
Good luck and good for you that you want to protect your baby for inhaling dangerous chemcicals!!

This may help you- I just learned about this new paint- Mythic Paint that is safe for people, animals and the environment... and no bad smell and low VOC's! This seems to be exactly what is needed for a child-friendly space. The colors choices look great- I'm trying to decide which one to paint a room in our place.

5th Street Ace, 1055 5th Street NW in the CityVista carries Mythis Paint- AND are locally owned, same people who own Logan Hardware, Tenley Town Ace. and Glover Park Hardware store.

FWIW in my research about paint I found Aura by Benjamin Moore. It is low (or no VOC - I can't remember) I also learned from the paint store guy that the darker the color the more VOCs a paint will emit.

Most of the painters we've interviewed use Benjamin Moore Aura paint. It is low VOC and dries very quickly. They say it is easy to work with. Also it is very low VOC, almost no VOC compared to other low VOC paints.

We used Benjamin Moore ecospec for our son's room. We bought the paint & then hired painters. It went on beautifully & is very low VOC. You could also try clay based paint. They sell that at Bngalow in Del Ray.

We just used BM Aura for our whole house and it was great--no smell at all that I noticed (I was 5 mos pg and sensitive to smell). Also, it is self-priming so only two coats are needed unless you're covering something really dark.
