Going to Amsterdam without kids -- suggestions of things to do?

Anonymous
My husband and I are going to Amsterdam for about a week in early November. Does anyone have special "insider" tips about what to see and do? Thank you!

My husband and I went to Amsterdam, for us 3 nights was plenty...we took a train to Bruges Belguim and we stayed there for two nights. It was around 2 or 3 hours on the train but incredible. It's a very well preserved little town gotta check it out.

You have to check out Anne Frank Musuem, the shopping near the train station, and just stroll the streets. We did take a look through the red light district for the experience. Hope you have fun...

Riijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, boat ride on the canals maybe

Don't miss the red light district, something to be seen.

The above sights plus a day trip to maybe the flower market - I've always wanted to see the bidding in action!

This thread inspired me to dig out my travel journal from my wonderful Benelux trip 11 years ago. My priority was to go at Tulip Time, so I did lots of tulip-related activities, like the flower auction at Aalsmeer and a trip to the beautiful Keukenhof Gardens. Not sure how the weather will be in November, but you'll still have plenty of things to do.

I agree with lots of the recs so far. I re-read The Diary of Anne Frank on the plane on the way over so it was all fresh in my mind when I arrived. That Anne Frank House was my first stop - very emotional. Canal rides, Rijksmuseum, Westerkerk (a church), Bejinhof (an old convent) etc., are also great. Attend a concert in the city's concert hall - it's supposed to have some of the best acoustics in the world. A gem is Amstelkring - a seemingly normal canal house with a surprise church on the top level. One of the famous places to eat is d'Vijff Vleghen -the five flies! There are also lots of places for wonderful Indonesian food.

You'll have plenty of time to venture out into the countryside, or even beyond. One day I visited Delft and The Hague. We also stopped at Madurodam, which is a fascinating place - a kind of Holland-in-miniature that you can walk through. Interesting even without kids!

I too went to Bruges and Brussels, and believe it or not, my favorite place was Luxembourg. It's breathtaking, with its cliffs and castles and bridges - who knew??

Have fun.
