...... please share whether or not your child is learning cursive handwriting in school, which grade they started to learn, if they are in private or public, and which school/county? Do you think this is an important skill, or are you fine with print writing only?
I remember learning cursive handwriting, started in kindergarten. I did not grow up here. Being only able to write 'print' in my mind was always associated with meaning one can barely read and write... I recently went to an elementary school and was very surprised to see all the little essay displays and such; all in 'print', is this not taught anymore? |
| Moco public, 3rd grade |
| Mine learned in Gr. 2 at a Catholic school. They are now in jr. high and they use it exclusively. It's especially helpful now with so much note taking and outlining in subjects like literature, science and history. Sure they can type papers but for taking running notes during discussions the cursive is very helpful. |
Yes. Third grade. DD is very proud of herself for learning it too! |
| 2nd grade, private school. |
Yes, I agree! How would you take notes otherwise? |
| MoCo also and for my middle kid, third grade. Due to extenuating circumstances, my oldest was never taught cursive. But, it so impeded his ability to keep up with school work that in seventh grade, the school taught him cursive writing. |
| APS - 3rd grade. |
| montessori 1st grade |
Alexandria or Arlington? |
Arlington |
| FCPS taught in 3rd grade, but they didn't spend much time on it. DD (4th) can do it, but isn't comfortable in it. |
| Barely taught in Prince George's County : a little in 2nd grade; a little in 3rd grade, but no serious attempt at instruction. |
| my kid started learning in 1st at a private, with mom coaching at home. now in 5th grade and is one of the 3 kids that write soley in cursive. I insist that he doesn't write in print. |

My DC is not in school yet, but I am a little shocked to hear that it is taught so late overall, rather than the first and only way to write, since you don't need to learn to write print, if you learn cursive. You can switch to print automatically later, it appears like a double effort for the child the way they are doing it now.
