I am actually a radio reporter working on trying to find out where all of the children will go and how this will affect parents in their commute, childcare costs, etc. Anyone who would like to talk to me anonymously about their concerns, feel free to call my cell phone at (202) 253-4873. I'm really interested in hearing your side of the story.
BTW, I will keep your comments anonymous because I understand people want to protect their jobs and I want to protect my job to by keeping my word. Markette Smith, WAMU 88.5FM markette@wamu.org (202) 253-4873 - cell |

I would suggest looking for something now, to get your name on a waiting list, or whatever. I am a home provider in Alexandria, 1.5 miles from Huntington metro. I may have 1 full time slots OR 2 part times slots open by end of the summer if not sooner
you can email me at mnchkds1@aol.com for more info |
| I read that article in the post and what I don't understand is why they weren't looking for a short term location since they knew there were problems. Even though, it wouldn't be right on site, surely there are some churches, empty office space in the general area that would do a quick re-model to accomodate the center. Parents at that center should really be outraged and asking a ton of questions. |
| It appears that it is GSA who is closing the center. They are the ones who are responsible for this mess. They knew that the center was in poor shape. I feel so sorry for the teachers, parents, and children who will be out in the cold. It would be a good idea for GSA to find an alternate space. I can't imagine that they will do this however. |
| Just to let everyone know, I'm pretty sure there are a few slots at Bright Horizons FDIC-DC for everyone but infants. |

There's a Washington Post article about it in today's paper. The link is http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/plan-to-close-usda-day-care-center-upsets-parents/2012/02/13/gIQAbQpBDR_story.html
I represent many of the parents affected by the closing. To contact me directly, please call me. Mark Thompson Vice President AFSCME Local 3976 202-720-7741 |
| Are there any updates on the status of the closing or move? I am considering a job at Forest Service and would like to know the status of the center. |
| Yep - they are not closing, but they are moving across town to the GSA building at 18th and F Streets NW. Currently Bright Horizon's Fingerprints operates at this location, but Fingerprints is moving down the street to the Dept of Interior and USDA is going to move into their spot. This is temporary while USDA builds a new facility on their campus. |
