Changing your job title on your resume

Anonymous
Today, I received a suggestion that I change the title from Secretary to Executive Assistant in order to make my resume more appealing since I am changing career paths. I need an outside opinion on this, would it make my resume more appealing? I have been sending out resumes for the past two years and have had no serious responses. Could this be it?

If it is government related stuff you may even use "program assistant." Good luck.

Just be sure that your reference will verify the new title. You don't want to be accused of inflating your experience. Lying on a resume can be grounds for termination.

How about Administrative Assistant? I would only use the word "Executive" if you have supported a VP or above.

Your job title will be verified by your potential new employer. You will get caught fibbing.

Thanks everyone. Even though it was actually a Recruiter that suggested the title swap, I thought I'd get a second opinion.

Please, please don't change your title: I am an employer who interviews lots. I am very careful with reviewing resumes and titles (because I am interested in the employment culture from which people come to interview) so I often ask not only the title but also ask the employer (as others have said). If a candidate doesn't have the integrity to report accurately (and that's how I would view it, for I wouldn't have guessed that a recruiter would have told someone to fabricate) then I'm not going to hire.

Good luck: be proud of whatever job you have and let that pride show; titles aren't everything -- performance is.
