Which pool in Bethesda do you prefer, and why? (Palisades? Merrimack? Mohican? Any others?!) Does the county public pool in Bethesda have any pluses or negatives over the private pools? I grew up in a suburban neighborhood in NY which had its own pool club and everyone we knew belonged - it was nothing fancy but it had a pool, snack bar, ping pong, rec room, and swim team. It seems like in Bethesda there are various choices for pools, not one per neighborhood, so not sure which to try to join. (I know there are wait lists - we may try for a late summer membership at one to get a feel for the pool, but not sure which one or if the public Bethesda pool is just fine.)
For the pools that don't have residency requirements, I like Merrimack. They have a great baby pool and pool for beginning swimmers.
We use the public pool because it's as convenient to us as any other, and we don't go often enough to make a full summer membership worthwhile, so I guess the biggest plus is that it's affordable, especially for those of us going only 1x a week or so. The pools are nice (baby pool, teach pool (not always open), big pool with slide/diving boards, and lap pool), but there isn't much in the way of facilities-- IIRC the baby pool is the only one with a shaded place to sit and the snack bar is pretty basic. Can get a little crowded at times, and I think the mornings are reserved for things like lessons.
Mohican is about to start a remodel. We love the community feel, the back pavilion and grills which are open to all and the movie and raft nights. Great low-key swim team which does well but still feels recreational for those who are not year-round swimmers. Downside - parking.
Looks like Merrick has some new rules about boundaries. I have been looking as well- it's stressing me out because all are full. I guess I need to plan on swimming in 2014?! Have you found any yet?
We belong to Mohican and hardly ever go now that kids are older. We may drop the membership and go to Bethesda instead. The pool seems a little stuck in time although the new board seems to be trying to move things forward.
Palisades has about an estimated 5 year waiting list at this time.
This is OP - thanks for the responses. I have been told that one can get a "late summer" membership at Merrimack and Mohican pretty easily, but that full summer rentals take a few years to get. Why is the wait so long at Palisades - are there less pools that far out (Mohican and Merrimack look so close to one another, and to the Bethesda pool and Kenwood CC)?
Has anyone heard anything about Wildwood Pool in Bethesda?
1651, we joined there one year. didin't really enjoy it--kiddie pool was not shaded and tended to be kind of gross. lots and lots of kinds running amuck. people weren't particularly friendly; i've heard iti s better if you have a kid on the swimteam. one or two of my neighbors love it!

Has anyone heard anything about the Bannockburn Pool in Bethesda? Mohican, Bannockburn and Merrimack seem all very close ....? Any advantage in one versus the other?
Thank you! |
It seems to be the pool pople join when waiting to get off a waiting list for other pools. |
How do you go about getting a late summer membership to Mohican? There's nothing on the web site about it.
