I am pregnant and considering switching to this practice, but wanted to hear from people who currently see the docs there. How do they handle after-hours emergency calls? I am specifically wondering how long it takes to get a call back & if it's a Dr from the practice or a resident that calls you back. Also, how hard is it to schedule your regular OB checkups with the Dr of your choice?
I realize that this is a large practice in a teaching hospital and that alone doesn't bother me. I don't need tons of hand-holding and personal attention, but I also don't want to feel like no one cares or has any idea about your specific condition. |
I go to the GU practice and had my baby with them last year. Unfortunately the doctor I really liked is no longer with that practice, and I don't care for the few other drs I met there during my pregnancy, so I might end up switching before getting pregnant again. (I am hesitant about it because I would like to stick with GU hospital and there don't appear to be many private practices that deliver there). Logistically I would say the worst part of the practice is the long wait times, even for early morning appointments. However, in my experience they are good about returning calls. I called a few times during the day with questions/concerns and had my calls promptly returned. During the day there is also a nurses' line where you can ask questions. The one time I called after hours the on-call doctor called me back in about 5 minutes. I didn't interact with any residents until actual labor/delivery (and then there were very many!). I had a good experience, but I also had a fairly easy pregnancy so there weren't many issues that came up. It's definitely not a hand-holding practice though. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy. |
OP - thank you for the helpful info. |
I had both of my babies at GUH and highly recommend it. Amazing clinicians, prompt return calls by nurses, staffed 24/7 for all OB needs, likely to deliver in private room, amazing nurses. The negatives, parking sucks, food is no good...but they are good at delivering babies! |
