Why not get a small one from target to hold you over until income taxes? Search sites like craigslist where people sell used items for cheap. I am not sure if allowed, but try a local dump? People throw stuff away there that are actually in great condition. Talk to someone that works there, I am sure they will be understanding.

Put an ad on Craigslist, "I need your fridge. I need it to be free because I can't afford one. I know you want to get rid of your old fridge..."
Before you do, figure out how you can beg/borrow a truck to get it to your place so that you are ready to move on it when it happens.

In addition to Craigslist, you can also join freecycle and post a request. (There's usually a limit on the number of requests a month.) Who knows, maybe someone will respond.

You could also ask a local church for assistance - some help neighbors in need with discrete purchases like this.

brick of ice, covered with sawdust will not melt.
Have this in a wooden box, and you have an instant refridgerator/cooler

See if anyone you know (maybe someone's kid has recently moved out of a college dorm?) has an extra mini fridge (dorm size) you can borrow for a few weeks/months 'till your tax refund comes in.

A couple months ago our kitchen fridge broke, and the part we needed to fix it was going to take a couple weeks to come in. Luckily we had a small dorm size one in the basemet we were able to use until the part came in.

Actually, if you have transport, I see someone offering a free fridge on Craigslist

Just don't buy foods that you have to keep cool.
Or eat the food you buy the day you buy it

If you have kids i would swallow it. It is temporarily and you can give it to someone else that needs it later. I know i still cant afford to give up time or lots of money but I try to help when I can.
