| Do the scores on the Cogat and NNAT correspond to actual IQ? Like a 132 on the NNAT roughly equals a 132 IQ? |
I'm pretty sure they have nothing to do with IQ |
Correct http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/tests.htm#c Measures reasoning abilities that are critical for success in school. Administered in a group setting. Riverside tells us that the CogAT is NOT an IQ test: "Q: Is CogAT an IQ test? Are SAS scores IQ scores? A: No. CogAT measures reasoning abilities. The SAS scale used on CogAT provides normalized Standard Age Scores for that fraction of the population that attends school. Although SAS scores are very helpful for professionals, nonprofessionals can confuse them with IQ scores, so they are generally not reported to parents and lay organizations." |
| The tests are not IQ tests, but intelligence is part of what they measure. |
| thx for explaining. I guess I was part of that group confused since the scaling seemed similar (e.g., 132 floor for gifted class = 132 IQ). So much for my own reasoning abilities! |

For most ability/intelligent tests, 2 standard deviations (SD) above mean is the lower end of gifted population. It's about 97.7% percentile. The normal mean is 100, NNAT (50-150) and Cogat have SD 15, NNAT 2 (40-160) has SD 16. So 132 of NNAT2 is equivalent to 130 of NNAT, top 2%. This standard was not invented by FCPS, it is commonly used to identify gifted kids. Different states/districts have their own criteria for GT selection, from 88%-98%. FCPS uses 98%, that should be in the high end for GT program.
+-3SD (sigma) covers 99.72%, so 3SD above the mean is ranking for 99.86%. They are very rare tails. |
| I hope I'm not too late to weigh in. Does the above post mean that a 132-147 is 2 Standard deviations above the mean for Cogat? So a subscore of 148 and up is 3Sd? DC had a 150 composite, are we talking less than 99.99 percentile? That seems unbelievable. Seems like my DC's scores aren't so different than others I've seen here. I thought the scores went to 160. I'm confused... help. |
