| My child made the AAP pool (comp score 99%). Is entry pretty much a given or could GRBS or some other factor still preclude acceptance? I'm guessing we don't learn the GBRS score until after the acceptance letters are sent? How much effort should parents put into the application process if their child is in the pool?! |
|
There is never a given as the committee seems to rely heavily on the GBRS. 99% is also a large range, scores could be anywhere from 134-160. Historically, scores in the 130's could go either way. 140's and up lean a bit more toward the liklihood of acceptance.
Put a good effort into the packet, but don't make it seem desperate. |
| There are many kids in that 99%. The GBRS will be important and if your teacher thinks your child is doing well he will probably get in. However, don't short change yourself. If you think your child needs to be challenged further by being in a level IV class, fill in the optional parent questionnaire and hand in a few examples of his work. If you can get a meaningful letter of recommendation, do so. (Remember that parents of a lot of kids with lower scores will get outside IQ tests - for which everyone seems to do well - and will be self referring and appealing.) There's no cutoff in the numbers - the county states that whoever is found to be eligible will be placed in the program. This year, however, the word is that the tests were easier and there are many more kids who did well. (Not sure how much truth there is to this statement.) I do wonder how the county will find space for many more kids at the centers. Our center's classes are already quite large. |
Why is this? Do private psychologists use easier IQ tests or score more generously or ?? |
| On the contrary. Private WISC is a true IQ test (unlike CogAt, which is an ability test.). WISC is individually administered (unlike group CogAt). WISC is the gold standard, committe knows it, and Fairfax would screen with it if it wasn't so expensive. There is no way to prep for WISC, and it doesn't lie (that's why you hear about WISC trumping everything else on appeal). A high IQ kid can have a bad day and bomb the CogAt, but an average kid is never going to score 130+ on the WISC. |
| What happened to the rest of this post? Are we sensoring here when we don't agree? |
|
Any one from buzz aldrin school got pool letter?
|
I don't get this. What do you mean? |
| I was looking for some information I saw on this post last week. It is not here now. Something about the test changing this year. There was much controversy. It seems as though good information has been removed. |
What information? On the CogAT Form 7? http://www.riversidepublishing.com/products/cogAT7/pdf/CogSpe_v59-28-11.pdf |
And did you check this thread? http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/360/158039.page#2088202 Does not seem like anything has been removed to me. |
| Specifically I was looking for a link that was posted to get more information about the "easier" test this year. |
| Just google cogat form 7, it should be easy enough to find. |
The link was already posted in this thread and the other linked thread. Should be easy enough to find. Plus, as the PP noted, there is always Google. http://www.riversidepublishing.com/products/cogAT7/pdf/CogSpe_v59-28-11.pdf |
And it would be helpful if someone would point to the "much controversy" part. Missed that altogether, including in the other referenced thread. |
