Arlington Science Focus - What options are there for younger sibling - Pre-K

Anonymous
Hi! We would like to move in-boundary for Arlington Science Focus. We currently live in DC, but we are looking to move right now to Arlington.
What do families do with a younger sibling who is eligible for pre-K next school year? Are there pre-K programs near Arlington Science Focus where sibling can attend? We are trying to determine whether we should just wait another year until younger sibling can attend K at Arlington Science Focus.

Also, if anyone can give their feedback on ASF, that would be wonderful

Why do you want to do this? Does DC show some exceptional aptitude in math and science? Don't you want a more well-rounded schooling?

Yes, my DC already has a love for science. DC wants to be a chemist?

Another question: Sorry, I am new to Arlington school system. I don't understand the boundary map for ASF. Why does it appear to be in the middle of two zones?

OP here - Just to clarify - we are looking to move right now, but only so my DC can start first grade in ASF. DC is in K right now.

don't feel this is fair to ASFS, coz 1) i've known several well rounded kids of ASFS, and 2) i'm not certain the curriculum is really that different (or narrowly focsued) from another Arl school

I think it is an extra hour 60 minutes of science a week..not really a life changer either way..but it is supposed to be a great school.

Arlington public schools only have preschool for special needs children, low-income children, and a very few spots in the Montessori program for non-low income children (don't even worry about those). So are you asking about regular preschools in the same area as Arlington Science Focus?

I'm asking about Pre-K (four year olds) not Pre-S (3 year olds) nearest to Arlington Science. Yes, I am looking for regular pre-K programs - not based on income because we don't qualify for low income programs. I am also not very interested in programs which combine Pre-K with Pre-S.

Pre-K is preschool. Arlington doesn't have public pre-K. There are some popular preschool programs (e.g., Mt Olivet, Kinhaven, Trinity Presbyterian) in that area but it might be hard to get a spot for a four year old.

I don't think it would hurt to wait another year until both children can attend ASF if you have options.

That's not true. That's like saying an apple is an orange.

Pre-K = program for four year olds.
PS = program for three year olds.

OP - I know that DC has tons of Pre-K programs, but Arlington does not.

Tonight is Kindergarten information night for Arlington County. It's at 7pm at Washington & Lee High School. After the intial presentations in the auditorium, you can meet with principals (or assts) from each elementary school. You should try and come -- good opportunity to get your questions answered.

Science Focus is a neighborhood school -- but also a "magnet" some kids get in by lottery who want to be part of their special curriculum.

You can be in the Key boundary and attend ASF if you don't want Spanish immersion.
