Westbrook Elementary School-Bethesda

Anonymous
Hello,
My husband and I are considering moving to this neighborhood and would love to hear opinions on Westbook Elementary.
What do you like/dislike and why? What are the other parents like in general? Do you feel there is too much stress placed on standardized tests, etc.? How is disipline handled in general(or specific examples if you have any)?
Thanks in advance!

Not the OP but would like feedback as well.

Our friends with kids there seem pretty happy, but the school is overcrowded. They had two temporary classrooms set up in the parking lot this year, and next year there will be 3. I've been told that there are enough children entering K this fall for four sections, so those classes should be relatively small (in the neighborhood of 20, as opposed to 25), but that raises the question of how the school will house all these kids if future cohorts are equally large.

This school used to be a hidden gem in Bethesda: small, intimate with an incredibly dedicated and talented staff and very involved (i.e lots of SAHMs) parents. Unfortunately, word got out and folks flocked. Now, it is just like all the other overcrowded schools in Bethesda. And parent involvement is not what it was b/c people bid up so much on the local housing that many more families need 2 incomes to afford the neighborhood (which used to be a good mix of middle (on one side of Mass Ave) and upper (on the other side)earners). Its reminds me of some of my favorite vacation spots and how they were ruined by development once they were "discovered". They become something other than what they were and all the folks who moved in for the uniqueness contributed to its demise.

I think this is still a very good school. I have friends there and they are impressed. I've seen the PTA booklet and it is overwhelming to see all the activity at the school.

I don't have children at this shool, but I have friends who do. In terms of parental involvement, I know that two of my friends who had volunteered to help in the classroom were only given volunteer slots once a month--they would have happily gone once a week--because there were so many parents who wanted to volunteer, that they had to ration the volunteer slots!
