dry flaky skin on face

Anonymous
The skin on my face is getting super flaky, despite moisturizing in the morning and at night, and using minimal make-up (either powder or nothing). It is especially flaky by my eyebrows and jawline. Please recommend a face lotion that I can get at a drugstore - nothing too fancy or expensive. Currently use Eucerin at night and Aveeno during the day.

OP here - yep, got some of that going on, as well... otherwise I might just skip washing my face and only use water to rinse and then a lotion. Hate what the winter weather does to my skin . I just don't ever remember it being THIS bad before.

I use Ponds cold cream for cleansing and Ponds moisturizer when my skin gets really dry and it works really well.

Also don't use powder when you're really flakey. It makes it look worse. You liquid foundation if you need something.

I recently moved to DC from Texas and also started dealing w/ extremely dry skin. I have sensitive skin, so I'm already limited to what cleansers and moisturizers I can use. But, I do know that (per my dermatologists) that Cetaphil and Purpose are two of the best lines for sensitive skin. HOWEVER, my skin still was extremely dry even when switching to the "dry skin" versions of these product lines. So, last week I went to Celadon Spa for a facial and my esthetician showed me how there are still chemicals in many of the over counter product lines. So, I switched to their all organic cleanser and mositurizer which have no chemicals...AND dry skin bye bye!!

The combo dry skin/acne may be something more, like sebhorrheic dermatitis. I've seen a derm a few times for mine (unsuccessfully) and plan to try a new one soon. I hate how I can't cover the redness with makeup because the flakiness makes it look awful.

Neutrogena ageless intensives deep wrinkle night moisturizer took care of that for me. If I use it almost every night the flakiness is gone.

Also took care of the pimples, which I still get at 38 for the love of God.

Cerave really works for me! I was pleasantly surprised - nothing else does.

I actually just resolved this problem by switching to DHC Deep Cleansing Oil. A friend gave me a free sample, and holy crap. At first it skeeved me out - you are basically dousing your face in oil and then rinsing it off - but it actually works well. My face hasn't been this clean and clear since before puberty!

you can also try olive oil (make sure it's fresh) and castor oil.

and, OP,i know you want something cheap and this is definitely not it- but i tried laura mercier pink lotion (can't remember what it's called). its about 80$ for 3 oz or so but it lasts forever and works really well.

Get some straight Glycolic Acid through Amazon, com and apply it 1/week, get lower strength if you ahve never used before (like 35%) or higher (50%) if you have a tolerance. You apply it with a cotton ball, leave on between 1-5 minutes then remove with water. Moisturize with something listed here (I dont need to so no red from me). Its not particularly expensive and it removes dead cells, rejuvenates natural collagen, and gets rid of pimples. Love the stuff.

It may not be dry skin. I had that and the dry skin acne. My derm said it was basically dandruff on my face. Nice. He had me wash my face and hair with a special dandruff shampoo. He also gave me a Rx lotion to put on. Worked like a charm.

OP here. Thank you all so much for the suggestions! The flakiness is the worst for some reason in the morning - and liquid foundation seems to make it appear pretty bad during the day - while pressed powder at least gets rid of some of the shiny spots from the super moisturizing lotion. Went to CVS last night and kind of combined your suggestions - for night got ponds cold cream and the new neutrogena chemical free night time moisturizer - and then for the morning got the chemical free burts bees cream cleanser (felt very refreshing!) and ponds lotion. I have to say - I have never felt my skin so soft after cleaning as I did after using the cold cream last night! Seriously, super soft! My hair is sometimes has dandruff issues, so I'm wondering if I have a similar issue as the poster who's doctor said she basically has dandruff on her face... so I also washed the worst areas of my skin with my dandruff shampoo in the shower last night, so that might have helped as well. My skin was still a little flakey this morning, but not as bad as it normally is. AND - my pores and pimply areas actually looked smaller, too. I also got a mask to use tomorrow night to try to get the top layer of dead cells off. If all of this doesn't work, think it will be time to see a dermatologist.

May try a mild diy face make to get rid of the dead skin? I use queen helene apricot facial scrub and freeman cucumber peel off face mqsk q few times a month and it makes a big difference for me.Both can be found atCVS and are less than $10 each. Just make sure to try them in a small spot first to make sure they don't irritate your skin.
