Natural birth with doola?

Anonymous
Is it just me or does it seem like every person on this board wants a frickin doola and natural birth?
I want the drugs! All of them! Epidural risk is very low and I think you people are crazy. Plusmost of you will end up getting an epidural anyway! How do I know? I work in the medical field and have already had one child - 9 times out of 10, the epidural is requested/demanded despite all of these detailed birth plans. Good luck doola lovers!

It's doula, genious. Medical field, you say?

Uh, yeah.

It's also entirely possible your epidural won't take.

OP, what the hell are you so angry about?

Hey OP, guess what? I had a natural birth without a doula and I didn't "request/demand" an epidural either!

Yes, I am the OP, and no I am not mad about anything. Sorry, while in medical school I focused on learning medicine not on the spelling of "doula." While this board is helpful in some respects, I do not find it realistic or representative of the labor/delivery choices that most women make. I also don't understand the self-righteous attitude of some of you who have had natural birth (previous poster, does that ring a bell?). I just think this board makes it seem as if all women have natural births with doulas and that's just not the case. Far from it.

Take some deep breaths! Not sure why you are so angry.

Childbirth includes many personal choices. Every woman has a right to be informed about the options and what potential side effects may result from those treatments. She also has a right to choose whether to take advantage of any treatment or to deny it within reason and without endangering the life of the baby. Who cares if someone wants natural childbirth or an epi-drive-in... as long as she ends up with a healthy baby and a good experience, that is all that matters!

I hope that you are not a practicing doctor. Your attitude is scary.

And I'm a lawyer who, while in law school, focused on the law. And yet, somehow, I still managed to learn to spell the word "medicine," although unrelated to my field. It's called being educated. And no one said this board was representative of the labor/delivery choices that most women make.

Hey OP, when you say you work in the medicine field you must mean in the billing dept., right? You can't really be an L&D nurse (you do know what that stands for?).

If my memory serves me correctly, there have been many discussions about using epidurals, c/s, and even music to get you through labor so how can you generalize that women on this board are self righteous about doulas and natural birth?

If it makes you feel any better, OP, why don't you just post your little story on DCUM about how great your epidural was and you can become a self righteous mom that other people can complain about?

Perhaps you should repeat your ob/gyn rotation before having kids. They usually don't give you an epi at the first sign of a contraction, sometimes it does not take or in some cases a complication may prevent the epi (ever heard of HELLP). If you want pain medication go for it, but as a medical professional...if that is what you are...you should realize that the intervention do have some drawbacks. Nothing is perfect or completely pain free.

My high risks MFM recommended a doula for my second birth..not exactly natural with severe PE but she was wonderful help during a very stressful experience. I did go epi free but had a number of other drugs to deal with the PE and induction.

PE stands for pre eclampsia. OP probably didn't know that....
