WISC vs. WPPSII

Anonymous
I have the following upcoming dilemma and probably there are people out there who have good thoughts on this. As we all know, the child has to take the WISC test for Pre-K admissions. If the child is less than 4 at the time of the test (even if she is a day short of 4), she takes WPPSII. From what I understand, WISC is lot more verbal based, and longer. My kid has her birthday in the beginning of October. She is bilingual and as a result, her English is not as developed as English of a "normal" native speaker. I would certainly prefer she takes WPPSII as she has a shot at a higher score (as it is not so verbal based). Do you think that such planning of the test date looks bad/suspicious for admissions? I am guessing usually people do the testing in Fall so taking the test in late summer or in September, given her birthday, would look at least odd. Thanks!

WISC is for children 6 years and older. Your child would take the longer version of the WPPSI. The shorter version of the WPPSI is for children younger than 4 years old at the time of the test. It is recommended that the child be as old as possible when taking these tests. I've been told that test results are more accurate the older the child is.

Our preschool tells parents to take the test before the child turns 4, as the test is shorter and therefore attention issues are less problematic. It won't look funny.

Actually, the WPPSI version for kids under four relies very heavily on vocabulary. The version for older kids adds more tests of reasoning (both verbal and nonverbal).

go for the wpssi at one day less than 4 years old or thereabouts. big difference between the little wpssi and big wpssi. our tester advised us to do that. she said the big wpssi is harder for the little 4s because it requires quite a bit more attention, more sections, etc.

From what I hear, the WISC results are not that important. Mention in the interview that your kid is bilingual, that will count.

Is this true? If not the test, what are the important factors for the older childen?
