Un-preschool?

Anonymous
Anyone NOT sending their 3- or 3.5-year-old to some kind of school in the fall? We started last spring in a DC cooperative play, and it was a good experience, but most of the kids his age from that class are moving on and I am afraid he'll be in a class with a lot of just-turned-two-year-olds, far smaller and less verbal than he is, and just in a very different place developmentally, and that the program will not come close to his needs.

But everything else in our area is either closed out for this year, or farther away than I want him/us to have to commute (I don't want the car to be part of his or my daily routine), so I am looking for an alternative that gives him social as well as intellectual stimulation. Anybody else in the same boat? Or been in that boat and want to tell me what you did, and how it went?

My son is 3 and will be going to preschool this fall. I think it will be hard to find a 3 yr old NOT enrolled in preschool (esp these days). You can provide much more intellectual stimulation than any school but it will be the social aspect that will be hard to replicate. Try looking at area preschools and be flexible. They may have openings say 2 days per week instead of 3. Or in the pm but not in the morning. My son acts the age of the kids he is with so it might be worth it to look around for last minute openings unless you want your child around 2 yr olds.

Where do you live? My son's preschool in Potomac recently opened a third 3 YO class. I agree that it is hard to replicate the social aspect. You can send him 2 days a week (3 1/2 hours).

I wouldn't worry about the other kids being behind, b/c so many will have attended the school as 2 YOs. (I assume you meant just turned 3 YOs, not 2; they 2s are in a different class).

OP here: I am down in Adams Morgan, and you'd think there'd be stuff nearby, but it's all bus or car distance, except the school for friends which I'm assuming there's no way he'd get in, and SED, which is full day and quite expensive. I loved ALG, but it's two miles away. Gan HaYeled is up in Cleveland Park. The Montessori in Woodley is out of my price range, even if they wanted us. Am I missing anything?

Check with Metropolitan Methodist. It's near AU, which might be a little far for you, but they have part time programs and sometimes have openings. I also read that St. Columba (near Tenley) has openings.

You might want to look in the recent archives for St. Columba's discussions. A lot of unpleasant things are going on there right now.

I think that is an overstatement re: St. Columba's (and I have no affiliation there). They had an issue with a teacher's husband and it has been resolved.

As I said to OP, check out the archives. There is a reason there are suddenly slots available.

I just saw a sign at Washington Hebrew Congregation advertising open slots. It's right off of Mass. Ave., near AU. I have Jewish and Christian friends that send their kids there and like it. They have part time programs as well.

i think there's another montessori in woodley..little flower? they may have openings. i've also seen info about some smaller spanish language immersion programs...i would check archives.

it's not the end of the world, btw. if he ends up not in preschool this year, enroll him in some classes/set up playdates. i think jonah's treehouse on wisconsin (again a transportation issue for you) has an afternoon programs for 3 year olds. or a nannyshare?
