We are looking for someone to put in hardwood floors on the second floor of our house and stairs, and we live in DC. Any recommendations?

we locve the look of mahogany- we have santos mahogany- dark brown with some red (vs braziliancherry that is mostly red)- another issue to consider is how much sun your pladce gets-- if a lot- depending on the wood- it can vary significantly with sun- like brazilian cherry is very variable)- so keep that in mind when you choose a wood- good luck

We used the Floor Gallery in Rockville a few years ago; done quickly and very nicely. I think I found the name from an old Washingtonian story online about good hardwood floor companies, and I recall they listed several in DC as well. We chose the Floor Gallery after receiving multiple quotes and going thru a huge learning curve on all the relevant issues. I'd caution against the big box stores - we tried to get quotes from both, although Lowes never actually gave us a firm bid despite many follow-up calls, and Home Depot gave us a bid that didn't take into account some of the technical issues with our subfloors that could have been disastrous. Quotes and availability did vary considerably so it's worth talking to different companies.

Also, pay close attention to the staircase issue. We got quotes for the staircase and second floor a year ago (and decided to use our annual home improvement fund in other areas) and Floor Gallery warned us it would be far more expensive than it might be worth for our old house. They said in many cases the underlay of the staircase is not plumb and it can take a ton of time (and money) to lay down hw properly so that they are 100% even without cracks or need for too much trim moulding. They advised us to simply recarpet the staircase and put the money toward the second floor. At least one other company didn't even raise the issue when giving us a quote. I appreciated the warning and the level of detail even though we put the job off for more urgent repairs!

Bamboo. It's the green way to go. Costco actually sells beautiful bamboo flooring, at an excellent price.

Bamboo scratches very badly.

Never exprienced any problems with bamboo scratching easily. Maybe if you bought it at Ikea, and didn't get quality flooring, yeah, I can see that.

Washington Post did an article about 2 years ago about how bamboo floors did not wear well. My suggestion is to find someone who has had bamboo flooring for 4+ years and ask them how it has held up. There's a lot of variation in bamboo plank quality.

She is not asking what kind of material is best suited. She is asking for an installer.

Read people, read. I know you all have expensive and extensive educations.
