It outlines some very serious issues with violence, drugs, guns and, strangely, sewage that absolutely need to be addressed by MCPS - no child should be in this sort of learning environment. But how does sending the Farmland ES kids to Kennedy solve any of these issues?

Separately, Farmland ES is made up of mostly dual working households. It's a lot of government workers - NIH, FDA, Walter Reed. The last At a Glance shows it is 18% FARMS, 28.1% EML, is relatively diverse and is in the walk zone for Tilden and Woodward. I don't think any child deserves to be bussed out of their community to fulfill the BOE's quotas but I wonder how Farmland specifically was targeted for this social experiment.

Particularly since Farmland students can walk, bike or take public transportation to Woodward, and this buses them past not only Woodward but also Wheaton. But I agree - why Farmland?

We know why Chevy Chase was singled out. Same goes for Farmland.

I don't. Can someone spell this out? Honest question.

FARMland kids will be 100% FARMs if BOE had it's way. 😉

Why oh why does it make sense from any perspective to send kids on 45 minute bus rides to school? Not good for the kids, not good for the environment. Not good for the pocketbooks of anyone! What madness sends the powers that be into paroxysms of absurdity? No goal can be important enough to torture the whole generation of children by shifting them around is if they were fungible commodities enslaved to the whims of this school board with myopia of the vilest sort.

It is Silver Spring board members trying to make their property values go up at the expense of others.

Well then they wouldn’t go for option 3 (if DTSS).

Oh yeah Farmland and Chevy Chase are getting f***ed in option 3

Y'all are acting like they've already decided on Option 3. Not gonna happen! Enjoy your summer, check back in the fall when we have some more options to ponder.

Presuming this was meant for me, I don’t wish ill on anyone’s kids. I commented that seeing some people worked up about their property values and only their property values provoked some more radical instincts in me. I do not think these people are actually doing themselves any favors, and people who oppose option 3 would do well to distance themselves from this perspective.

I have an expensive house too and would not be pleased to lose a lot of value, but these people are arguing that their livelihoods are tied up in continued school segregation, which is . . . a perspective.

But it's not really segregation. Even the schools people claim as being "white" are actually pretty diverse. WJ is currently less than 50% white. My daughter just graduated, and the graduating class was a great melting pot of White, Black, Asian, and Hispanic students. Option 3 would have Farmland going to Kennedy, which will be close to 50% FARMs, 57% English learners, and just 13% white students. Most WJ families are okay with being rezoned for Woodward, but busing across the county to a school that will likely be one of the lowest rated schools is understandably concerning. After accounting for the white flight that will certainly occur in that scenario, Kennedy will probably be closer to 10% white and have an even higher FARMs rate. It just seems crazy.

I think it’s funny that they don’t take any Whitman kids and bus them to Woodward (or Kennedy).
