Apparently its racist to hire tutors and form pods, we must all suffer equally?

We all do things that aren't perfectly justifiable from an equity standpoint.

+1 I don’t get how pods are wrong and evil but having a tutor in a normal year is fine. Private schools never spark this kind of outrage. That it’s ok to over pay for a house in the right pyramid. But to have a couple of kids meet with a and a teach or tutor oh the horror! Oh the elitism! Think of the poor kids!

I’m sick and tired of people using racist in this way. It diminishes the term and it makes it seem that all black ppl or minorities can’t afford pods. That’s wrong to assume since some of us actually can afford to do the same. Some of us are also forming pods! Honestly this whole thing is just so taxing- real racism is being dragged by the KKK in the middle of the night.

So let’s ignore all of the systemic educational social economic structural racism that affects people of color?
It’s so much easier to make it about wearing a white sheet so that if you don’t have one on you don’t have to think about it, you don’t have to look at your brother and sister and think that maybe they need to change something that they are doing, participating in or promoting. It just makes it a lot easier doesn’t it because you don’t have to change anything you do or anyway you think.

Pods are fine as long as you don’t demand special treatment from the school, and as long as you make efforts to help the kids who are higher needs in the school/community.

Pods are fine.

Period.

Looking out for your child's well being is being a good parent

All these SJW can shove it

There was advice in the NYT article to invite economically disadvantaged students to join your pods. I doubt anyone on DCUM will.

When my kids can check the URM box, we'll consider extending such courtesies.

+2. It's just pure jealousy. Middle class jealous they're not UMC. And many UMC jealous they could afford the better suburban house, but can't afford the bespoke supplements.

This, they are just weaponize racist to guilt people who are living better than they are. Used to call them snobs or Yuppies but racist is just so effective now. People think it is progress but society will desensitize very quickly and it will allow real racist to blend in thus empowering them once the accusation is overused to exhaustion.

I'm fairly certain some on school boards consider all of the above racist. There really needs to be a service that tells you if something is racists - it's getting confusing

Miss me with this crap. Honestly all of it. What has come over white people? Is this real? I would think this is a troll farm except I see people in my FB feed posting similarly. Stop agonizing, and do something constructive.

But first, stop assuming you know what’s best for black people or, worse, that black people are all opposed to pods. In my very diverse friend group at least half are doing pods of some sort because the shit has hit the fan and we are all literally trying to survive. And parents are helping other parents.

You sound and look like fools constantly posting your self awareness journey toward accepting your inner racist - just stop blathering on and do something else. Make your peace with your position in the world how you will. Pull every advantage out from under your kids if that’s your thing. Or donate your time or money to BLM. Or whatever. But do something, stop assuming, and stop presuming you know best. Ugh!

Don't worry, as a proud* member of the "professional left" (worked for a crunchy non-profit for over a decade) the number of co-workers or friends with means who are not using their resources to benefit and supplement the education of their kids right now is approximately... = 0.

*Yes, of course I'm aware of the hypocrisy, but believe me, it is there for all ideologies and groups...

This reminds me of the movie Titanic. When all the well-to-do people were saved first, and the poorer folk were locked into the lower floors to probably die. Hey, when there's a sinking ship, I guess everyone just starts thinking "Every man for himself", everyone else be damned.

there are lots of parents in public schools who were happy with the quality of education their children were receiving, and aren't anymore. What should those parents do

Life is every man for them self, occasionally collaborative but always sink or swim. Every descendant of the Titanic survivors thanks their lucky stars the lifeboats weren't overwhelmed by the unwashed masses due to being locked bellow if that really even happened. Focusing on fair retroactively is a fools errand

realize that the whole world is F-n unhappy and their kids aren't special or immune to the impacts of an global pandemic. Best effort is the best people can do. That is not really impacted by what you want

And I think that is what some people are doing by hiring tutors and forming pods. Making their best effort. No we aren’t immune to the impact of the pandemic but I can make the best out of a bad situation.
